Help Auto brightness App?

Edit: Here's a small issue; when I hold the phone in the usual way the back camera points down and light readings are low. Any possibility Lux could take readings from the front facing camera since that light level corresponds with viewing the screen?

Lux is programmed to use the front facing camera if it's available. The problem is, I don't have a device with a front facing camera, so I've never actually been able to test it myself.

Just to be sure, your device uses Android 2.3 or higher, right?

Yes, I'm using the stock android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread)

Edit: Regarding which camera is being used I assumed the back because of my experiment where I pointed the back toward the light and seemed to get a higher reading. I haven't been able to replicate that though. How can you tell which camera Lux is using?

Point the camera to a dark object, then a light one. If the value changes then that's the camera being used. You'll probably have better luck with advanced mode enabled.

Try this FREE app "aBacklighter"
(Check this: aBacklighter - Custom Brightness per app + Outdoor Mode )

My current settings:
(1) enable Custom Mode (30% *common* brightness)
(2) enable Outdoor Brightness (95% brightness for high ambient light condition)

The feature "custom brightness per app" might not be necessary for you." But with a low custom common brightness and a configurable outdoor brightness, there is no need to switch to system auto brightness and/or update device's brightness anymore. Simple to use, Battery Saving and it's Free.

Are there any apps out there that could be used to increase the aggressiveness of the autobrightness? I feel like it could be dimmer indoors/at night, which would result in battery savings.

I know I can change the brightness manually, but that can be a problem if the screen is dim, I go outside, and want to change it. The automatic control would be ideal if there was a slider that allowed us to control how aggressively it acts.

aBacklighter is good but I need to be able to set a higher threshold for going to outdoor mode. Also switching back to custom mode takes too many taps. A widget to switch back to custom would be perfect then the app wouldn't need to take up room in notifications.

* I found one that works for me. "Brightness Widget - Backlight!" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoeniix.backlight
You can have as many levels as you want including auto. I just use two.

Let me clarify some points about your concerns.

(1) aBacklighter does allow you to set a higher threshold (e.g. the ambient light) for the outdoor mode. Simply use the seek bar to adjust the outdoor brightness and the threshold.

(2) In fact, there is no need to manually switch back to custom mode. Once an outdoor brightness is triggered (used), the brightness would remain until the NEXT TIME your SCREEN is ON (unlock) or the Custom Mode is re-enabled.

For example:
You go outside -> the outdoor brightness is triggered because of a higher ambient light (depends on the threshold you have specified) -> then you use your phone at the outdoor brightness -> when you have finished using your phone, you turn off (unlock) the screen -> When you go into your house/office and want to use your phone (i.e. turn on/unlock the screen), the custom mode is back automatically.
So, there is NO TAP REQUIRED to switch back to custom mode.

(3) Since the switch between custom mode and outdoor mode is done automatically, you do not need any widget on your home screen.
BTW, you can remove the "quick setting panel" on notifications window through aBacklighter's Settings Page (if you do not like it).

Hope this helps. :)

The outdoor mode triggered unexpectedly with the trigger set as high as it would go. Great idea but I need it to only go to outdoor mode when I'm outdoors.
