Help Auto brightness no longer working.

Some time between noon and about 4 pm today, the auto brightness on my Turbo decided to quit working. When toggling it, it just goes to minimum brightness and never changes. I've tried going through the drop down quick settings, the main settings menu, even activating it with a third party widget.

While investigating, I noticed that certain Moto Assistant features were also not working, like the wave-to-dismiss alarms/calls and the face detection demo.

After several restarts and force stopping the Moto Assistant related processes, Assistant eventually restarted and the demos began to work again. But the auto brightness is still borked, although now toggling it brings the brightness to about 40% instead of the minimum.

The Moto Assistant stuff still works… the front camera still works, so I dunno if this is a sensor issue or what. I just did a partition cache wipe a week ago and it took so long I'm not eager to do it again anytime soon. I'm not really eager to do a factory reset, either, due to having so many apps I'd have to restore. I booted in to safe mode and it did not correct the auto brightness issue. The only app that was updated today was the Trigger app by Egomotion, but force stop/uninstalling that did not affect anything.

Is there anything I can try between "learning to live with it" and "factory reset"?

Try running in Safe Mode. If the problems stopped they are caused by an app that you added.

The recommended step before that (of course) is to do a Wipe Cache Buffer. Without it a Safe Mode test that does not demonstrate an added app problem may not be correct.

Thom, I ran it in Safe Mode last night and it did not fix the brightness issue. I did wipe the cache partition again today and then went back to Safe Mode, still no luck.

I think you have done everything possible other than a Factory Data Reset.

What does your dealer say?

I had a problem months ago where the three buttons at the bottom of the screen stopped working. I did everything I could think of. I then concluded that I needed a replacement. As a final step before replacement I did a Factory Data Reset. The problem went away and has never returned.

I am not eager to do a factory reset, since I have about 130 installed apps to replace. But I may try that before going to Verizon.

I know of a few people who plan on doing a full reset after they get lollipop, so I may wait until that rolls out tomorrow (hopefully) before blitzing everything.

Mystery of mysteries, the auto brightness feature just started working again around 1 am this morning.
