auto brightness

I know it's been talked about a lot regarding other phones, but what's your thought's on using it on this phone?

I have auto-brightness enabled on my Nexus 4, but the screen brightness doesn't seem to increase in bright daylight/sunlight, staying at about 40%.

I also have it enabled. In general I like it - and other auto brightness I've tried have been too bright for me. I haven't checked to see what it's setting itself at in full sun, guess I need to run a test.

I think I see it making changes from time to time. I hope that's normal...

It generally works fine here, though like hstroph I find it doesn't ramp the brightness up enough in bright sunlight.

Me too: I have it enabled. Works fine.

Just realised that I used to minimise brightness whenever I played games on my last phone to save battery but never bother doing that with the N4 .. and my battery lasts a whole lot longer.

I haven't tried it without auto brightness. On my old phone I was forever adjusting the brightness, then decided to just stick with auto. I like the feature and dont need to turn it off.

I find the battery to be great in general, so have no need to test without auto. Sorry :)

The affect on battery consumption would depend on whether you kept the brightness high or low.

For a while, I kept my old phone on low brightness all the time. Can't say I noticed a significant improvement in battery but I did notice not being able to see anything on the screen when I was outdoors :)

Same here. Not a big change in battery life having low brightness and couldn't see a sh** outdoors. Automatic brightness it is.

I haven't seen any significant difference with it on or off. Maybe 1 hr less overall with the screen fairly bright. I never crank it all the way up, it's just too hard to look at indoors, which is where I use my phone most.

I keep it on auto as a general rule as it seems to be adjusted pretty well. I've had other phones (Samsung in particular) who's auto setting was all over the place.

I keep mine on auto brightness as its easier than me adjusting it all the time but it has not significantly improved my battery than when its on full brightness all the time.

auto off, set it to about 20% which works fine for me indoors.
then I use AOKP's brightness slider from the notification area to adjust as needed when outdoors.

I have also noticed it is very difficult to see the screen in the car while the sun is shining when in "auto" brightness.

Manually setting to full bright solved this problem.

Not had that problem - and my phone mount sticks on the windscreen so it is in light ..

Do you a sun roof or is your phone placed at an angle that reflects a lot of light, maybe?

My mount is just on the console (no air bags to worry about) with no sunroof. It gets light from every ambient angle, and if it reflects a lot of light, that means that a lot of light is hitting it, yet still on "auto" it will never increase brightness above 25% or so, requiring manual adjustment outside or in bright lighting situations.
