Help Auto-End List on Atrix

I am new to Android and just bought an Atrix. In the Task Manager there is an Auto-End tab to add apps to. In that tab it says "Apps on this list end when the screen times out." What does this mean?

I added Amazon and Skype to the list and left them running. Neither of them ended after a period of waiting, even when the screen went to sleep, so I'm not sure when they are supposed to auto-end.

Any help would be appreciated.

No, the standard one that came loaded on the Atrix. It seems to work well manually for shutting down apps, but the auto-end didn't seem to do anything when I added apps to its list.

Yeah I was wondering about that too - I'm guessing it's a motoblur thing because I never saw it in stock android. I would suggest getting autostarts for your phone if you root it (not a task killer, generally avoid those) to end the things that launch inappropriately if it doesn't work, but yeah I thought "screen off" meant when the screen turns off too - what else could it possibly mean?

From what I understand of the auto-end function, it will end the app only when the screen is off. So that when your not actually using the phone it will not run in the back ground. But when you turn the screen back on (start using the phone again) the app will start back up again. So ic you don't want the app to run keep doing what your doing and manually end the app.

That being said, it is still useful to help save battery life when your phone is inactive. And I LOVE to save battery life. But it would be cool if you could set apps to auto-end and stay endded.

Hope that helped
:-)

Welcome, to Android and the Atrix. The task manager that comes with the Atrix is simple and works really well. The auto end list, only activates after the set time, for screen time out. So, for example, I have my screen set for time out, going to sleep, after 2 min. Of none use. At that time, the task manager ends all apps that are running, that I put on the auto end list. Also, remember that certain apps will restart after the screen turns back on.

In that case, I am tempted to set every app to auto-end except a few. But I am not sure which ones NOT to put on the auto-end list. Any suggestions?

i just did that...I just got he Atrix 4G and am completely new to smartphones as well. I thought apps closed when i hit the back button but i can't tell that's true from what i've read today.

Any advice on a clear way to manage this, and data in general?

Thanks.

Hi,

Just got my Atrix today and was dismayed to find that it has a task killer installed. Android is not windows and having a task in memory is no bad thing. Android is very adept at managing its resources and tasks, having a task killer will drain your battery (as your phone will be starting and stopping tasks all the time). Task Killers do have limited benefit though, in the event that you download some rogue app that has been coded poorly/maliciously.

Some indepth info can be found at FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android it also has a rather nifty TLDR section. Probably puts it better than I ever could.

The app on the Atrix is called a "Task Manager", which is a little different then a task killer app. I use the stock task manager a lot and it is very useful. I have certain apps to end when the screen either times out or when I lock the screen. The biggest benefit is being able to close apps that don't have an exit button, which are most of them. The Android OS manages apps and resources well. You can only close 3rd party apps, as the stock apps are grayed out. I have heard that using the back button to exit an app. For me, sometimes you have to press the back button like 3 to 5 times before it closes. As opposed to just opening up the Task manager and ending it that way.
