Just been given a new Nexus 7 with case. My colleague has got exactly the same and his switches on and off again when opening the case, but mine doesn't.

Not sure if it's a setting somewhere sync'd across from my Nexus 4

Do you have the same case as your colleague?
the case needs to have a magnet near the spine which causes the device to switch on and off (sleep) when opened or closed.

If I'm not mistaken it's a custom Kernel feature. Did you try putting your nexus into his case?

Here is description of one of custom kernels

  • compatible with flo (wifi only) or deb (lte version)
  • easy installation and configuration with Aroma installer
  • optimized for extended battery life
  • linaro 4.8 -O3 build
  • complete user voltage control
  • sweep2wake
  • doubletap2wake
  • enable/disable magnetic on/off
  • optional USB fastcharge
  • NTFS r/w support

Yep was going to try that tomorrow. Frustrating as both exactly the same other than mine I logged in with my existing Google account which then downloaded my apps and seems to have set some passwords for my favourite WiFi networks.

Oddly he doesn't have to fully close it, only quarter of the screen needs to be covered for his to sleep

The sensor is magnetic. It is on the front, bottom-left corner of the screen.

Try using a small magnet to test.

I don't have a case with the magnet, but I've tested mine with stock Android and Cyanogenmod, and it works fine.
