Root [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows) by DroidXcon

I posted about this in another persons thread. But I think it deserves it's own thread to keep track of. I ran the Auto Root about an hour ago, & it went perfectly fine. He made it quite painless. I did it using my Sony Vaio S laptop running W7 Home Premium 64 bit using the HTC Sync drivers he linked to in his first post. Just follow the instructions accordingly and pay attention. Credit goes to DroidXcon as well as:

[Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows) - Android Forums

Not sure if DroidXcon comes on this board as much or at all, so I will pm him on Android Central and remove it if he wants. Make sure to thank him and others if you use it!

DroidXcon is fine with a linking to his post over there. He doesn't want to keep track of two different threads & I don't blame him. It would get too confusing eventually. So as long as mods are fine with it here we should be good to go.

I just used this method. It worked great.

There is a bug in the .bat script during the third stage when it is pushing superuser.apk
If you have to stop part way through the third stage and have to restart, it gets hung up at that point.

I went in and edited the script, removing that line from the code.

This should be a sticky cause I did this method and I think it was super easy and went perfectly smooth.

Agree, I know in the OG Droid forums we had a "Guide to Rooting" sticky that had all of the links to the various root methods, guides to what root was, and tutorials on what different terms meant.

Perhaps UBRocked can get something together for us over here?

(yes, that was a hint UBR, get your butt in gear!!! :P )

does anyone know if there's been a youtube video uploaded.
Oh, BTW, it took me about 4 months of asking questions before I rooted my DroidX - that I sold to get this puppy!

I used this method today and it worked well. The only glitch I ran into was that superuser had to be installed manually after (for some reason I thought it was going to happen automatically), and I also needed to install BusyBox on my own (which was very easy, got it from titanium backup). Until Busybox went on I couldn't get root priveleges, even though I was listed as S-off.

dude, this is the easiest root method for the TB yet. srsly im at work and had it rooted in 15 minutes. it only took that long because i had to reply to some emails hahah!

thanks! huge props!

I'm a recent switcher, coming from the BB Tour. I have been quite intrigued about rooting my phone. I mainly want to root so I can remove the bloatware from Verizon and hopefully get better battery life (I currently get about 6-8 hours with moderate to heavy use)

I had a couple of general questions, that I couldn't seem to find the answer for by the searching the forum.

I realize rooting the phone voids the warranty -- would that be the manufacturer's or the insurance Verizon offers for a monthly fee?

I understand if you root, you can unroot -- would a manufacturer or say someone at Verizon be able to tell I rooted previously?

When the official OTA RUU comes out, what should rooted users do? Unroot, install OTA, and then re-root?

I have been doing a fair bit of research into the rooting process and what it exactly entails. I'm a bit leery because I don't want to brick my phone and/or say if I broke my phone be stuck with a crappy replacement phone.

Loving the forum by the way!

its just like any other insurance... neither verizon or htc want to pay your claim if they can think of an excuse not to. unless you get in very close with a particular store/staff who all have rooted phones and will give you a wink/nudge about it being rooted,id unroot before making ANY kind of warranty claim.

nope. :)

if you are rooted, your cuctom recovery(clockwork) will prevent the OTA from happening. you would need to find a stock recovery image to install before even condsidering to recieve the OTA.

when an OTA happens, the developers will usually have it prior to its release, and slightly modified versions will be available for you to install via rooted means(hboot or clockwork recovery) and remain rooted. since these changes will include the new software version numbers, you will not be pestered by your phone to update your software,as you would be if you tried to simply remain on stock release rooted software.

in other words, youll apply the updates manually. likely before the unrooted ever even realize that an ota exists :)

the other thing that happens is that the rom developers will incorporate the changes into their custom roms. for example your useing rom A from developer B wich is based on software 1.1.1 and an update comes out. developer B will incorporate 1.1.2 into rom A and offer it as an update for you to apply. when the OTA hits, your phone again thinks it is allready running the current software and doesnt pester you to update.

for what its worth the chances of brickiing your phone to an unrecoverable state are small. they do exist,so carefully consider your confidence and skill level with messing with such things. if you follow directions carefully and have done research prior,id say the chance of bricking is slim to none. if you get a wierd error or message during any process, stop immediately and seek help from chat or from the forum before attempting to continue.

hope that helps :)

One more thing that Scotty didn't mention- if you do root and something seems to be taking a long time and then you're not sure about one of the messages you got DON'T PANIC! Wait, then wait some more, then wait again before unplugging your phone.

Right. I read that pushing some of the data / writing the new image can take a little bit.

I think once the 4G service gets restored and I figure out which ROM and kernel to use, I may take the plunge.
