Help Autocorrect

Is autocorrect on the X something that can't be turned off, at all? I use Handcent instead of the base text message program, and I turned off what I assumed was auto correct. Now, however, there are just random occasions where I'll type something and automatically get a different word that I can't replace with what I want -- 'aloe', today, refused to be anything but 'slow.' I had to type the word out with spaces between the letters. And it's really infuriating because it doesn't ask, or give me a choice, it just replaces the word and won't let me do anything else. Or is this a Handcent issue?

SwiftKey is a great KB replacement. It will suggest words as you type, but you can always select what you are typing to override the automatic correction. Plus, it will learn as you type, and even predict what you will type next.

Menu> settings> language and keyboard> multi touch keyboard settings> auto correct

THANK you. I feel spectacularly stupid for missing that, since I could swear I'd already turned that off.

I will definitely look into that.
