Help Automatic screen brightness problems

When I activate the automatic brightness and the screen is turned off the screen is black when it turns back on. Anyone else having this problem?

Do you have any apps that modify your lockscreen or an app that controls screen brightness such as elixir2? If you do maybe try a reboot if you haven't already or possibly removing them. I can't replicate your issue but auto brightness wasn't working at first after i installed elixir2 but a reboot solved the problem.

No, I'm not having that issue. I've kept it on auto most of the time and occasionally I notice a bit of flicker but nothing too distracting.

My screen is solid black, if I put a flashlight on it the screen will brighten up. Tried to do a simulated battery pull and I guess I pushed the wrong button and now I am stuck on the Google start up screen.

Try the following.
1. Turn off auto brightness
2. Move the manual brightness slider back and forth a few times
3. Leave at full bright
4. Restart tablet
5. Turn auto brightness on again

That might clear any software issues. If that doesn't work, then I would guess that your light sensor is dead.

Good try but no luck. I have to shine my flash light on it to make it brighten up. I guess I will be calling Google for a replacement. Also having some light bleed issues and one dark corner on one side with the brightness about half way.

I'm having the exact same problem. If I set the tablet to automatic brightness, the screen goes completely blank until I put it under a very bright light. Not sure whether it's a hardware or software issue though.

Mine works as expected, except the brightness seems like it could be a bit brighter. (Custom roms usually let you tweak that.)

Still, battery life is great as-is.

Welcome to AndroidForums, chegwin!

I'm sorry to hear your having problems with the new tablet. Have you contacted Google?

Trying to get hold of Google at the moment is next to impossible. 40 minutes on hold last week without an answer, and my emails haven't been responded to either. Try again next week I suppose!

Just noticed this but the auto-brightness is a bit glitchy. I was going to do some reading the other night and the screen wouldn't come on. Turned on the bedroom light and it worked. Disabled auto-bright and it's working now.

Now what to do with the $25.00 gift credit in my wallet!

Hi chegwin - I'm curious to find out what the outcome was?

I'm having the exact same issue - and will be contacting Google as well.

I'm curious if anybody else is having this probem:

When watching a youtube video in landscape mode the screen will gradually dim to completely black within about 10 seconds. It does not happen in portrait mode. I have disabled "Auto-Brightness" and "sleep" is set to 2 minutes. The same thing happens when watching a Netflix movie in landscape mode.

I found that if I set the brightness to 50% or higher, then this does not happen - the screen stays on as expected. But using it at that brightness is not always desirable.

I'm trying to contact Google about this - but am curious if anybody is having this problem.

Thanks,
Greg

I just received my Nexus 7 and have been having a lot of issues with the auto-brightness as well. The first few times that I tried to boot up, the screen kept going completely dark. When watching YouTube videos in landscape, it dims out completely as well. Hopefully a software update will fix this, otherwise I will return this very soon.

I've merged three various screen brightness threads together so if a solution is found, we only have to look in one place.:)

I have to admit that I haven't had much luck with the automatic brightness settings on many devices, and usually work out a way to easily change brightness manually if I can.

In the case of my Nexus 7, I use the widget that controls wireless and brightness.

Just a follow-up to let you know what happened. The first time I called Google I gave up after 1 hour 10 minutes. The second time I called and got through in about 10 minutes. They agreed it's a defect and to send a replacement. I received an e-mail with the RMA the next day. Hopefully the new one won't have these problems. I'll keep you posted.

Got the replacement today - much better. Brightness works correctly and the screen does not fade to black when watching videos. :-)

I have the identical problem. Sometimes just putting the tablet under a bright light in auto mode solves the problem with youtube, but then the screen remains much to bright on the home pages.
