Help Automatic System Updates on Nexus

Hello everyone,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Nexus Xmas week 2011. This morning, the following occurred for the second time since mid-January:
DESCRIPTION:
I got a 3-color display instead of a logon screen. The main parts of the display are a green android robot, and the words "Downloading ... Do not turn off target". Above this is the word "Start" inside a right-pointing arrow.
- At the top left, in red, is "00IN mode" -- or maybe it's "ODIN mode."
- At the bottom of the screen, in white, is system information, including
Board Name: tuna REV9
Board Rev: LTE-9
Build Date: NOV162011

MY QUESTION: Is anything happening? Nothing seems to be changed. My Nexus is still at ICS ver 4.0.2, as it has been since early January. When this happened this morning, the screen persisted for almost two hours. In my house, reception is usually 4GL, one or two bars. Thanks for any assistance, including providing me with a link to previously published text. Also, please excuse me for providing so many details ... I don't know which of these might be significant.
 
You seem to have rebooted into Odin mode.. either accidentally, or the phone did it somehow. Maybe some buttons were pressed while the phone was in your pocket? The normal way to boot into Odin mode is with the phone turned off to hold the power and the lower volume buttons. Then that screen that you described will pop-up. To boot back into Android, just press the power button once.

Would I be right to understand that:
1. Odin mode exists for advanced users who want to connect their phones to a computer and download programs to their phones?; and

2. My phone only comes up in Odin mode if I simultaneously press the power button and the volume button? Finally,

3. When the ICS upgrade to ver. 4.04 comes down, will my phone go into Odin mode to receive it? If not, what am I likely to see on the screen? Thanks heaps!
 
1. Yep, Odin is basically a way to flash firmwares and stuff. I don't know much about it and have only used it once because everyone usually flashes through CWM recovery or fastboot. I think engineers at Samsung probably use it much more.

2. Your phone should only boot in Odin mode if it is completely turned off and you press and hold the power and the volume down key simultaneously. (Holding power and both volume keys will boot into fastboot mode which looks sort of similar).

3. No, your phone should not go into Odin. I think after you download the update on your phone and decide to install it (all within Android through a series of notifications), it will reboot to an android guy standing up with a progress bar underneath him. Then after the progress bar reaches the end it boots normally. I haven't actually ever done an OTA update so this is just from what I read about it.. someone else can confirm if they wish.

So basically, if your phone is randomly rebooting into Odin mode and you know it's not you just accidentally rebooting it, it might be some sort of software bug, or worse, a hardware problem.
 
I bet I am accidentally entering that mode by the way I hold my phone when I power it up. I will have to watch exactly how I am holding it the next time I power on. Thanks.
