Root [Avail] Cannot use 983 codes on Straight Talk Avail

Hi, I have an Avail I purchased at walmart, for use with Straight Talk. I have read and read and read and still cannot get root on this phone. The *983 just sit there and don't do anything at all. I have downloaded the Tcard update linked on various threads here, then flashed, but still no go.

I am not hitting send after entering the code, as instructed in just about every guide I have read. Is the ROM different on these phones, versus the AT&T ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No its this same phone. I got mine at walmart also. After you put in the dialer number at the bottom of the screen did you see a little note pop up for about a sec (wait for root) I let mine set for about 5 mins. Have you tried to download Superuser and see if you are rooted?

I never saw anything and I let it sit several minutes. Super user app doesn't show root. When I go to update su it fails due to lack of permissions

You must hit # twice after code. That will send it into root. :)

I just read that in another thread last night and that didn't work either. Do you think its because I already tried it just hitting it once?

Also I don't know if the t card is supposed to wipe the phone but after flashing my phone comes back on with my wallpaper in tact, all apps still installed, etc. Doesn't appear any data had disappeared at all. Is this normal? There are no errors suggesting the flash failed installing.

I danced around with this for hours myself. I just kept trying things, factory reset, tcard, etc. I believe that i flashed the tcard update again then tried the code and accidentally hit the pound key twice and it worked. I know your frustration. Try that, hope you get it.

I have exactly the same problem. Have tried flashing, factory reset, etc. Neither code, *983*7668# or *983*7668## bring up any notification at all. I have let it sit for 5-10 minutes as well.

Also tried running jcase's script, but the same thing happens and the script, while it keeps running, does not get root access.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Aimook

Same here, wondering if ZTE found and fixed the ability to use the code. Saw somewhere that it was reported to them by a user. My phone is a few weeks old and won't do anything when I use "983" code. No matter how long I wait or how many times I hit #. Now we need a new system to root our phones.

I used the *983 code last night. I was playing around with some themes from HTC. Didnt change a setting in the kitchen and I got a soft brick. So battery pull and booted up into CWM. Then installed my back up and then flashed the T-card. I needed a fresh start. rerooted with just the *983* code I dont use the adb root. Every thing works just fine. I guess i need to keep a copy of the T-card, So yes the code still works. IF you have done any updates from att you need to T-card then root. Then you can update if you would like.

OK. I think that newer phones may have had the 983 root code ability removed (hope not), but I am going to try the T card flash and then run through the process again (almost have it memorized by now). ATT updates or new phone ROM's may be the problem, thanks. How old is your T card flash? I refuse to give up. Plus there is a huge learning curve with these Droid systems. I'm getting faster anyway.

I downloaded the T-card last night. Thats why i said i need to keep this copy. I was deleteing it after i extracted the image and put in on the phone. So its still working. Im sure the newer phones my have the att updates in them. (dont know this for a fact) Just put the image on the sd card then go to settings, about phone, system updates, storage card updates, and KABoom baby fresh and ready to root again.

ZTE wouldn't remove the ability to root. It's the carrier (at&t,Verizon, metro, etc.) that doesn't want you to get root. The carrier wants control of the phone, which should be the users. Its the same as buying a car and not being allowed to change the wheels, or the stereo. We bought it, how we use it, is up to the consumer.

I posted on G+ how to get the ROM, one.three, onto my AT&T Avail.

It was a bit hokey, as I was having the same problem as you all with the 983 codes not wanting to work.
