Available Memory

I am in the Task Manager and there's only 3 things running: Phone, Home, Task Manager. And yet it shows my Available Memory at just 44M, which I figure is very low, no? Or is this a normal figure?

Which version of Android and handset do you have?

Android 2.2 and above is pretty good at task management so if it needs more RAM, it will free it.

It's strange that it will show like 40M Available, so then I'd launch some app and close it - and right away it shows like 55M Available!...

Yeah, that's fine. Task Management 2.2 is good, but with 2.1 it was ok too.

The OS will free more RAM if it needs it.

40M isn't bad. Remember, memory that isn't in use isn't doing you any good. The goal is to have enough available to allow reasonably quick response to requests for more memory, but not to keep a lot of idle memory sitting around doing nothing.
