Help avid turns off after being on little android dude screen

The phone turns on gets past the metro screen then when it get the the little android it stays there for like 20 seconds and then the screen just goes black. A friend gave it to me he thought the battery was dead. No idea if its been rooted. Anyone have any ideas?

Plug tyhe charger in. Leave it plugged in for 24 hours. Turn the phone on while the charger is plugged in. If it still does the same thing, the odds are that it's not a dead battery. (It could be a bad battery, but after charging for 24 hours, it should have enough charge to stay on for a few minutes, at least.)
