Awesome gas discount!!

So a couple months back I read an article on Lifehacker about store discount cards. It said that instead of signing up for tons of cards at different stores, simply use your local area code and the number from that song (867-5309). I have been doing that ever since.

For those that know Safeway offers a $.03 per gallon discount if you have one of their cards. I figured I would take advantage of it. After I input the phone number I got a pleasant surprise, a $.30 discount. That is a huge difference when you have a 19 gal tank like me (plus get 14mpg like me).

It turns out that the more you spend at Safeway the more gas discounts you get. I'm not sure exactly how they add up, but this "community" card saves me a lot of money!

Very clever. So instead of getting the blanket $0.03 discount, adding the number bumped that up to $.30? Or was that just because you got 10 gallons of gas? Sorry, late night and I'm a bit slow on grasping this for some reason....

When you have a store's card you generally get three cents discount at their gas stations. If you spend so much per month you generally get ten cents per gallon discount on their gas. Never heard of a thirty cent per gallon discount. The one possible downside is that you usually only get some many uses per month of the ten cents per gallon discount. So if you use this whenever you get groceries and spend enough to get the ten cent discount there's a chance someone else could use it up with that number. Maybe if there's enough actually buying groceries with it to get thirty cents per gallon discount they're will be plenty uses of discount to go around too. Dunno. Worth checking out though since you're not really out anything.

Yes, $0.30 per gallon

Bi-lo has fuelperks as well, 5 cents for ever $50 spent. There it is unlimited, and I have 2.00 saved up over the course of almost three months. Will get another .25 this weekend (bonus for buying certain things, and they have some good deals on that stuff this week). So 1.25 or so per gallon to fill up next time. :D

Could someone add the country this applies to in the thread title please?

Since the song was a hit in the US mainly I would think that it is likely going to apply more to the US given if the telephone system is set up with a 10 digit # in other countries it may work.

Kroger (known by other names across the country), offers up to $1.00 off per gallon. You accumulate 100 points for each $100 you spend, and I think 50 points for each prescription you fill in their pharmacy. 100 points = .10c discount for every hundred points you redeem. You can use a partial discount in increments of .10c, i.e. if you have a $1.00 per gallon discount you can use .50c of it 2x.

This picture was taken 4-7-12. Gas prices in Nashville were in the $3.70-3.80 range, so this was a .70c per gallon discount.

I get how it works what I'm saying is that if my wife and I use our card now we get a known amount of discount every month and we're guaranteed that ONLY one of us will use it. If we start using the method the OP described and also add our purchases (wouldn't make sense to add our purchases to a card we're not going to get the rewards from) there's an outside chance that the total purchases on the 'shared' card could be used by others and used up. If enough people are using the 'shared' card there's a chance we could get less discounts per fuel fill up with this 'shared' card than we would get normally from our actual card. Did I explain that right? Sounds right in my head. Basically if one uses this method there's a possibility that they get even less discount than they would if they simply used their own card. Maybe just use your own card for all purchases and then when you fill up just try that 'shared' card number first and if the discount isn't that much cancel out and then try your own to see if it's greater. Just thinking out loud I guess.

I just use a gas brand-specific card and get a flat 3% off per fill-up at any of those stations. That brand has become more competitive price-wise but the 3% more than makes up for the difference in price and the 2 percentage points different on the rebate (also get 1% back on any other purchase). The offer I have is no longer available I think, the new offer doesn't appear to be as beneficial.

Don't forget, this probably also applies to discounts at the grocery store as well. The next time I forget my discount card, I'm going to try using the number instead of my phone number. I'm also going to use cash to pay though. Not that I think anything will happen, but I don't want my credit/debit card associated with someone else's account.
