If your referring to the live wallpapers when you install them my guess would be so they can check for updates in the market.

I downloaded a couple and installed them, but they won't open. They were the Nicky bubbles one, and a snow one.

This site has some good ones, but how do I get them on my phone? When I email it to myself it doesn't work and I tried typing it into the market but it shows no matches. That is two of the options they have listed.

The easiest way is to download a barcode scanner like "Barcode Scanner" from the market. Go to Live Wallpapers when you find a wallpaper you like; launch the scanner and scan the QR code, you will then..., never mind I just found a better howto. Check this out.
