Help Back button doesn't always work

Would someone have any ideas why my Back button won't always work? It seems to get balky when I want to back out of browser pages.

Are you using any custom ROM or a third party browser application?

Completely stock Samsung Fascinate. Still on 2.1 (all attempts to update (OTA and manual download) fail with lockup; must hard reset to get my phone back) and using the stock browser.

One thought was maybe there's some JavaScript or other code running - or even just an ad or photo downloading - and the page won't go back until everything's done?? I know I've mashed the Back button multiple times with no response - and then sometimes (but not consistently) it will suddenly go back multiple pages. I've also tried hitting Stop (upper left X), but no go.
