Back-Country Navigator

Hello. I managed to brick my droid2 getting it wet so i think the commando may be the ticket for me.

I'm a hunter/fisherman/backpacker etc and one thing i used my droid2 for a lot was the backcountry navigator app when hunting and backpacking. Does anyone know if this app works on the commando?

I'll really miss the slideout keyboard, but frankly, the droid was starting to act weird anyway after only a year of use, it was recognizing fantom inputs constantly, the face recognition sensor deal was crap and i was constantly hanging up on people and muting them etc.

Time to move on.

If backcountry navigator doesn't work, is there another topo gps mapping system with waypoints etc that people like on this phone?

Thanks.

I use Maverick, you can use a few different online map sources (like google sat if you so choose) and you just have to look at where you're going before you loose service and it auto caches the most recent 10MBs you were looking at for use out of service area. On the free one you can set 7 waypoints, more than enough for me, usualy, truck-river-trail-deer-truck... but it works well on my commando.

Good luck,
John

Pulled the trigger yesterday. So far so great. Love the external speakers! Wasn't expecting that.

Most of the bloatware i could care less about, even the outdoorsy stuff is pretty gimicky, and that's coming from an avid hunter/fisherman/backpacker. That's fine though, it doesn't hurt.

Backcountry Navigator was up & running in 10 minutes. Since they lost the license from mytopo, i'm going to see if i can pull the maps from my old SD card on the droid and import them to the Casio.

Anyway, thanks for the replies and if anyone else is considering this device for the same purposes, i'm quite happy after 24 hrs use :) :)

If that changes, i'll report back.

How about after 36 hours of use? :) I'm interested in this device, or maybe the next generation casio ruggedized smartphone, so it's encouraging to read reviews from real users.

im loving mine I've had it for a few weeks now an had no problems at all i place underground telephone cable and am very rough on a phone i go through sometimes 2 a year from scratch face covers or full of dirt crushed a couple of em mostly water damage
this thing is taking it pretty good i keep it in my pocket with no case or screen cover an a lot of time i wind up with red dirt and little peaces of rocks that will grind up against the glass and ruin it so far it still looks new its got gorilla glass on it plus i love it i like being able to listen to mp3 all day to and not killing the battery if you don't waste it the battery last me 2 days

Any updates from those of you with the Commando and running Backcountry Navigator?

I'm considering getting a Commando in the near future and the primary use would be running this application while cycling off-road. I'm comparing the functionality to a standalone GPS and if I can get a day of battery life (starting with full charge) while running Backcountry Navigator the Commando option seems like a good one. If I go this route I'll very likely purchase the Pro (pay) version of this app.

Are you guys happy after using the Commando with BCN for an extended period? Any particular concerns?

Separately, can anyone recommend where to buy a rugged RAM mount cradle for the Commando?

Thanks in advance...
