Root Back up before rooting??

So I downloaded the drivers and the one click root method from XDA. What I am confused about is the backing up part. Can someone pleeeease help me?? Maybe suggest where I can see videos that show me step by step from beginning to end. Also, how do I decide which ROMs to install? What I want the most is to tether.

I feel overwhelmed ...

Download Titanium backup to backup. I would recommend Cognition to a first time flasher, just because it is very close to the Captivate stock ROM and it is very reliable. Video instructions on backup and flash are in this thread.

If you're still overwhelmed, just take it step by step. Root first. What backup program have you downloaded? Titanium Backup is what most use, but I have to say, I've found MyBackup Pro to be better at doing a really problem free restore. You should back up when you do anything major, but you shouldn't have to restore anything when you're just rooting. What method have you chosen to root with?

Im usin xda's one click root method. I was confused cuz i heard i had to mirror backup or something....
Well, it doesn't hurt, just on principle - you should have a good backup program and set it to back up regularly. That way if anything happens, either by your fiddling or some other issue you can restore your phone fairly painlessly. Was your rooting successful?

what are some things that can go really wrong if you decide not to back up before rooting? Also is rooting pretty much like a total reset where you lose everything similar to reformatting your computer?
I remember reading somewhere that there are some differences between roms like cognition and Serendipity; how do I figure out which is the best for me?

No, rooting won't clear out your phone, but flashing a ROM will.

As for the difference between Cognition and Serendipity, Cog is written on a Captivate based OS, and is a nice, stock feeling ROM, Serendipity is from the Galaxy S world, kinda like the difference between a Malibu and a Porsche :)

I actually haven't done it yet. I'm hoping to get it done tonight. I'm excited but nervous lol. Besides Cognition which other ROMs are good?? Where do I download ROMs from anyway? Do u use yahoo or anything? Maybe u can walk me through it.

Go over to the Captivate Android Development forums and start reading. Find the ROM that appeals to you and read up on how to install a custom ROM (there's a how-to thread complete with videos there). I'm partial to MikeyMike01's ROMs, he's very thorough and exacting, he doesn't leave any detail unpolished. Others prefer Darky's ROMs, and there are many others.

I feel very strongly that you study first, before you start flashing things. People who don't follow directions are the ones who end up with things broken. I printed out the written instructions that are linked on the How to Install a Custom ROM post, so I could follow along on paper (I do better with paper than a computer screen :) ) Good luck with it and let us know which one you settle on.

I have to agree with you. that's why I'm nervous. When I would Jailbreak my iphone I always had a friend walk me thru it via yahoo or aim LOL. But I will take your advice. I do appreciate it.

Make sure to backup the internal sd and external sd card if you have one. Make a backup folder on your computer... drag and drop.

OMG I already rooted and didn't do that. I only did that flash recovery thing. NOW WHAT

If all you did was root, you are probably just fine without doing a backup..just remember to do a backup in the future every time you do something to your phone just in case!

Seth is right, but make sure to backup the internal SD storage, and External SD in the future. Otherwise you can lose photos and other things.
