Hello CSEV, welcome to Android Forums!
What phone do you have? Some of the stock text apps have that option, but not all.
If you really want a customized text app, check out one called (I think) handsent. I believe there is a free and paid app in the market, and it is quite customizable from what I remember.
If your stock app does support changing the background color, then it likely is with the menu button and then something like settings or customize.
Hope that helps, and welcome to Android Forums,
9to5

Hi there CSEV. :hello: It's good to have you here!
If I may, 9to5, the app is called Handcent SMS. It's really customizable and has several good preset options as well. Here's a link to it in the market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/handcent
I hope that helps, and that you'll enjoy the forums. :thumb:

Hello and welcome to Android Forums!
Handcent is a good option as suggested above, go sms also has that option, or use to at least when I use to use it. Doesn't hurt to look into
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
