Background Sync (What Setting Does it Change?)

I've just added the Power Control widget, and except for the background sync button, it's quite clear what the other options are doing. For example, I turn off GPS from the widget, and then in settings under location, the GPS is off.

However, although I have an idea that background sync prevents options from syncing unless they are brought to the forefront, I don't see what option in settings it is changing. Is there a way to disable background sync without using the widget?

I'm sure it's something very obvious, but I can't find it!

Any ideas?

I've seen those settings, but I don't see which option is changing when I click the background sync button on the power control widget.

All that it does is syncs things that are associated with your Google account such as, Gmail, contacts, and market applications. I use the widget, I turn it off during the day to save battery, but at night, when charging, I turn it on.
