Root Backing up and restoring 2.2 stock rom

I'd like to try a custom rom on my rooted Desire. If I want to revert back to the stock rom is this possible? I realise that it's easy to swap from one custom rom to another but not sure about restoring the stock rom.

Thanks guys. But maybe I should have been more specific. If I've done a nandroid backup can't I restore the stock rom from that? Or can a stock rom only be installed / restored by using the RRU?

I do a regular Titanium backup so it would be easy enough to restore apps etc from that.
