Backing up and starting again

my incredible s is too packed with rubbish etc. Whats the best way to start again, how do I back up and can I selectively restore. Do I need to reformat sd card etc

you can do a factory reset which does not wipe data on the sd card.

settings > privacy > factory reset

you will lose apps, msgs and contacts everything so look to back up apps etc using appmonster or something on market before you do it.
