Root Backing up before installing ROMs

I've been on the forum for a little while now but haven't seen any answer to this specific question:

How do you guys go about backing up everything (contacts, pictures, etc.) before installing a new ROM? I know that it's best to install a ROM onto a fresh phone (removed data, cache) but I don't feel comfortable yet with being able to restore certain things.

I have Titanium backup but it appears to only backup apps.

Thanks

Pics are stored on the SD card so that should be fine. Apps and such are backed up usually with Titanium backup I believe. You can find it in the market or here. The bootstrapper for the droid X has the option to do a backup/restore as well. You should always run that before flashing a ROM. As for contacts I don't think they really need to be backed up since they're all stored in the cloud anyway and will resync when you sign into your account.

I just installed my first ROM yesterday so I'm sure people with more experience will join in on this thread.

Thanks, as I said, I have the app. While some contacts are in the cloud (like those connected to gmail), others aren't, like phone numbers. I don't like to connect my google/fb friends with my phone contacts, because if I have a girl's number and she didn't give it to me, that's creepy. I know this because I restored a backup to get an OTA update and I lost the girl's number I had a date with last weekend! Good thing she has low self esteem and had to text me asking if I still wanted to hang out with her...
