Is there a way to back up contacts with gmail so that email addresses dont get saved on my phone? For example, last time I synced phone contacs with gmail, I had about 100 useless email addresses saved onto my phones contact list.

Go to Contacts then bring up Menu/More/Import-Export/Export to SD Card. Then create an email and select attachment and it should bring up a file manager such as Astro (I use ES File Explorer) and look in /sdcard/ for a file called 00001.vcf which is the contact backup file. If you have backed up more than once then the file would be 00002.vcf etc.....you can then import the file back into another android phone if needed.

Yes. Or copy this vcard file to your computer for further use.
