Help backing up to laptop

really need help used up whole day trying to figure this out.
i have a samsung galaxy skyrocket s2, i am trying to backup everything on my phone to my laptop but cannot connect to Kies. i have restarted my phone, debugging USB switch nothing is working. i have the baseband version/kernel version they both show up in that order under the about phone tab. i have no clue what else to do i need to update phone to the jelly bean one i just kept putting it off till now. please help ill post more info if you need it.

Kies can be very stubborn. If you haven't installed drivers for your phone, go here to download and install. You can also try a different usb cable. They can be finicky. If you are running any anti-virus, disable it while trying to use Kies.

What are you trying to backup? If pictures can you just copy them to your pc? Contacts you can sync with Google and they will restore if they need to. Messages you can use SMS Backup and Restore. App backup you can use Helium. I haven't used it but you can also check My Backup.
