Backup firmware

Hello, I have 2.2.1 At&t. I would like to install unbranded 2.2 rom. I would like to back up my current firmware before doing the change, so in case I don't like the new one I can go back.

Also, someone was saying something about partitioning sd card?

Are you intending to switch to a custom ROM? I presume that's why you want a parititoned sdcard.

You can't backup your current firmware, as that's only possible if that firmware is rootable, which 2.2.1 isn't. The best you can do is backup your data and then keep the RUU for your firmware handy.

You should be aware that the tool we use for partitioning sdcards (and flashing roms) has a bug in the current version and will brick your device if you try to partition the sdcard. So I'd hold off on that point for the moment.

what is RUU? Also how do you know if it is rootable or not? I am new to this and eager to learn more about android.

I forget what RUU stands for, but they are PC programs HTC release for each version of the firmware. You plug I'm your phone and it installs the firmware for you. That's why it's handy to have the RUU for the firmware that came for your phone somewhere safe, in case you ever need to go back to stock.

It seems that none of the 2.2.1 firmwares are rootable, but you can always give it a shot on yours - I'm not certain.

But if it isn't rootable, you have to downgrade to older firmware using an older RUU and something called a goldcard, which tricks the RUU into installing older firmware. Then you can root and backup your firmware and so on.

where can I get RUU for my phone, so in case something is not working I can return to the stock version

What's your current build number in settings >> about phone?

We have a list of some RUUs here, but you may have to do some googling to find yours.
