Help Backup old contacts to Google

Hello,

I had the Note 3 initially when I switched to T-Mobile, and then it was lost so I was left with a very old non-smart phone for about a month. I added a bunch of contacts in that time, and now that I have my Note 3 back, I got my contacts synced back up from the sim card, yet since my old phone wasn't a smart phone they wouldn't sync to Google.

How do I get my old contacts that aren't on Google backed up to Google?

My friend who works for T-Mobile told me to go into these settings:

So I did all that, yet still, none of the contacts from the old phone are backed up to Google. Why not?

Welcome to AF! :)

Open the dialer/people app on the note 3 and look for an export function (not having a note, I'm not exactly sure where it would be, sorry). That will create a csv file on your SD Card. Copy that to your PC, sign in to your gmail account and head here: https://www.google.com/contacts/. Select more, import, then choose the csv file you just copied over to your PC.

I'm not sure if Samsung do things differently, but that's worked on pretty much every other handset I've needed to use it on.

Thank you for the reply.

I actually didn't end up doing that (I tried when I saw your reply, but I have a Mac and it has been a pain to try to get my Mac to try to recognize my phone) but when fooling around with the options with my contacts just now, I ended up being able to do it!

Under my contacts, I went to the menu and selected 'Merge Accounts' and selected 'Merge with Google', and bam. They were all synced to Google instantly.

I appreciate your quick reponse!

Google syncs gmail contacts, it doesn't sync SIM contacts (what you have) or device contacts (contacts stored in the phone's internal storage). You can export your contacts to your SD card, then go to Google Contacts and import the file. (Turn off syncing first, or when you delete the contacts on your phone, it might delete them from Google too.) Then delete all the contacts on your phone (so you don't get duplicates), turn on syncing and your phone will sync with the contacts on Google Contacts.

Edit:
Typed it in when there were no answers, had to run to the other room for a minute (which took a few minutes), came back and hit submit, not knowing that the matter is fixed. And I can't find a delete box on the advanced edit, so someone please delete this post.
