Root Backup questions

Lurker
Hi guys,

I'm fairly new to tinkering with android phones, I just picked up an EVO V 4g a couple weeks ago actually, and should probably start off with telling you guys how much I've appreciated this community and the knowledge I have gathered by lurking around here.

I do have a few questions about backup methods though. If I understand it correctly, products like TitaniumBackup are essentially used just to periodically save ongoing changes to installed apps (and/or newly installed apps) on the phone, and something like nandroid backup is used to backup the entire device as a whole. Something that a responsible person would do before playing with new ROMs etc.

If that is so, then I guess my next question is, do nandroid backups also backup the hboot, radio and PRI?

And also, is it safe to assume that the nandroid backup available from within TWRP is compatible with the one from 4ext and the one from clockworkmod products?

welcome to the forums...
no, hboot/radio/pri are not saved in your backups...
the following partitions are saved... system/data/wimax/boot/cache

backups made with one recovery are not compatible with another... though i believe 4ext is the same as twrp but not compatible with cwm but dont quote me on this...

also, if you are now deciding on which recovery to use, i recommend 4ext...
its has a very nice interface that is more customizable with themes....
it also includes something called smartflash which better manages the flashing of the boot image for s-on users...

4EXT backups are saved in CWM format so they're compatible with , TWRP nandroids aren't even compatible between different versions. And the reason why Hboot, pri and radio isn't included in the nandroid is because flashing roms won't change them, you have to flash them separately. As others have posted, I definitely recommend 4EXT, even with s-off. I have found it to be the most full featured and dependable recovery available on our phone. OB
