Help backup/restore voicemail

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I don't seem to see any previous thread on this. I just replaced a Epic 4G handset and when I activated the new handset I had a single vm message download and the remaining messages didn't move to the new handset. Oddly the single message was never present on the old handset indicating that it probably never downloaded onto the old phone. Unlike with contacts there doesn't seem to be any build in in way to backup vm messages. While there are plenty of apps to backup/restore call logs, sms, etc. I haven't found any apps for backup/restore of voicemail.

I've read that the data is under /data/ but I don't see anything there with Astro. According to a thread I found Backup Sprint Visual Voicemail? - Page 2 - xda-developers it is possible, but the instructions seem to be incomplete or obsolete because I'm not seeing the files in question. Any help would be appreciated. I would be rather surprised if I am not the only one curious about this question. If I missed a past thread on this, a link to the answer would be much appreciated.

Firstly, you can't backup the data from your device for some reason (eg: storing to SD Card). However, with the new Voicemail-to-Text service, you can auto forward your voicemail to your desired email account from the Settings screen.

If you are still using the older Visual Voicemail service, the only option to backup your voicemail messages is to forward them to your email account manually.

When you replaced with a new handset with the same phone#, the voicemail client will pull the last 5 days voicemail messages from the server. Older messages will be gone for good. It is possible that sometimes your voicemail failed to reach you because of going in and out of coverage especially inside the shopping mall.
