i was just wondering (and a n00b),if i backup through CWM then do a wipe,if i restore the backup, will THE SAME settings be restored or just the contacts/sms/events be restored?if wiping doesn't restore my contacts/sms and i want to flash a new rom and wipe, how would i have my sms and contacts restored?and the apps too

When you restore a backup you took in clockwork, your phone will be in the exact same state it was when you took the wipe. All contacts, SMS and settings will be restored. You take a backup in clockwork in case something goes wrong with the ROM flash and the handset doesn't boot.

If your contacts are backed up to gmail, they'll appear when you link your phone to the gmail account again (for instructions on how to backup, click here. Different phone, same principle). You can backup your apps and associated data with Titanium. A guide on how to do that is here (again, different phone, same principle). You can also backup your SMS with one of the SMS Backup and Restore apps available on the market.

All make sense? :)

As said, a CWM backup is in effect, a snapshot of your phone at that particular time.
However if you change modems between backup and restore, this does not get reflected in the restore.
