Help Barcode Scanning

Anyone able to do it? I've tried barcodes, QR codes (got exactly one to work, after a looong while) and got an MS tag to work. I'd really like to be able to use the QR code feature for my business.

The problem seems to be that the camera just doesn't focus - on anything. Ever. It just acts like a fixed focus lens, and gets fuzzy on anything nearer than about 2-3 feet.

I've tried all the suggestions I've found - switch between front and rear cameras, all the different focus settings - including the touch control - rebooted, pulled the battery, even a complete factory default reset, to no avail.

How close do your phones focus?

I'm using ZXing Team Barcode Scanner without any problems.

Just wondering, does your camera make a clicking/crunching sound when it's trying to focus when you're barcode scanning?

soundping and cutterjohn- that's the main app I've been trying to use as well. And, incidentally, I could scan that QR, because it's freakin' huge on my 22 inch monitor - thanks! If only all the codes were that big....

bludd - no sounds, not even any apparent attempts to focus. I hear nothing, I see nothing change on the screen as if it were trying to focus. I've seen in other threads that the clicking, clunking sound will soon lead to failure - sorry!

I think I'm off to BB to exchange this puppy, sadly.

Thanks, folks!

Can you show me the threads you found about the clicking sound leading to failure? I tried to google it and couldn't find anything. I don't want my camera to fail :(

Maybe this is like super obvious, but when I first got the MT, out of the box it came with auto focus turned off. Yours is on, right? lol

Mine does the same thing. It makes a clicking noise - it keeps trying to focus. I was able to scan a single barcode. Maybe an exchange is in order...

So, trip to Best Buy yesterday, explain the problem, salesguy tries to tip me to the trick- oh, you're right. Hmmm. Factory reset- oh you did that already? Update- oh, there isn't one available yet? ...Yeah, we need to exchange.

So, after what seemed like a great deal of computer battle, and overrides, we open a new box.....
The new phone at least STARTS to focus, but appears to stick during its movement. Switch to front camera (which looked a hell of a lot better than my first one, as well,) Back to Main - camera looks decent, until we try to focus. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Temporarily stalled again. This phone isn't activated yet. He mutters something about "too many exchanges at one store". I'd mentioned something about "batches" at some point earlier, so the decision is reached that I will try the nearest store, about 10 minutes away, as they have some sort of "special allotment" and get new or somehow different stock. I don't mind this, actually, as it's more convenient to my house and work. I head over there, explain the whole thing all over again, with the new chapter. We try again.

Success! Wow, this is what it's supposed to do, huh? Actually focusing, quietly, on things at different distances. We swap ESNs on my account and I'm out the door, almost two hours after I'd begun at the other store.

And, yeah, it scans barcodes like a dream.

Here's a link to at least one reference to noises with camera failure. Middle of first post.

I think the comments I saw about actual clicking leading to failure were on Another Forum.

And yes, harvickchick, as stated in my OP, I'd tried ALL of the different focus options in the camera settings. Multiple times. Thanks, though! Sometimes things are easy to miss.

It seems pretty clear the camera focus mechanism was not well executed in these early releases....

Can someone tell me what kind of sound your camera makes when taking a picture? and also when using the using the barcode scanner? I just want to make sure my Triumph is normal. So far it takes good pictures but I don't want it failing on me later on.

When taking pictures my Triumph goes through a couple of clicks and then right when taking a the picture makes one loudest click it will make.

When using bar code scanner it cycles through a series of clicks as it is trying to focus.

Is this normal? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm using barcode scanner by ZXing, both on my Dinc and MT. Both make the "zzzrrr" noise while attempting to read the barcode.

I am also using the ZXing bar-code scanner and it makes a popping/knocking kind of sound when trying to focus. I would describe it like a small metal pin snapping against the inside of the phone. The scanner and the camera on mine seem to work okay though, they focus and take pictures as expected.

I only heard clicking the first day I used my camera. Since then I have taken a lot of photos with it and have scanned quite a few barcodes as well and it hasn't made a peep. Not sure why that is the case, but that has been my experience.
