Barnacle Tether

I am going to get my Eris today in the mail and am going to root it, probably on 2.1. I want to make it a free wifi hotspot (WITHOUT PAYING VERIZON FOR THEIR HOTSPOT). Barnacle Wi-Fi tether should do the job right?

If you install xtrSENSE or xtrROM (or just about any other custom ROM, but you mention 2.1), it will come with a WiFi tether app pre-installed.

Note that this creates ad hoc WiFi connections - they are not the same as hotspot connections, which are more like a wireless router. This is important because devices like the Amazon Kindle and (I think...) the iPod Touch and Wifi-only iPad cannot connect to ad hoc WiFi connections. Laptops should be all set, though.

BTW, with an Eris you cannot even pay Verizon for hotspot service - the Eris does not support it, so it is not available.

So I can use any root tether app (whatever i decide to go with) and won't have to worry about verizon charging me? (I will be getting the unlimited data plan)

All I said is that there is no hotspot service available to the Eris. I don't think that anybody has ever reported Verizon shutting down service, but if you tether you are violating the terms of your contract. There are technically ways that Verizon could notice (and most likely would be more likely to notice if you use a lot of data in a month), and Verizon has said in the recent past that they will start throttling the bandwidth of people who use a lot of data - though I don't think that I have read any reports from people for whom this has happened.
