Help Basic questions about 3g/4g/wifi, toggle...

LLGEG

Newbie
I know these answers are here somewhere, but can I ask in just simple terms about 3g, 4g, wifi, hotspot, etc? So many of the questions I have seem basic, but having never had a smartphone the basics aren't easy to learn/understand.

I am in a 4g area. How do I turn it off/on? I know 4g sucks major battery power. I know from reading here it's better to use wifi when possible, right, to conserve the battery? So at home, how do I turn off 3g/4g to just use wifi, OR when I turn on wifi does it automatically turn off 3g/4g?

I have been also seeing posts/references to toggling the above on and off. How do I do that?

Hotspot is just to use my phone to hook up to for internet for a pc/laptop etc when it's needed/not available, yes?

The Mobile Network setting under wireless/networks. When do I want to check that? Is that the 3g/4g setting?

Thanks for any help!!

Get the app "phone info" from market (by SC@Taiwan), then >phone information> (scroll down) and set preferred network type to CDMA auto.

When you turn wifi on, it will override 4g.
If you're using Sense, you can use the Settings widget and use the button for Data Connection to turn 4g/3g on or off.
If you're using something other than Sense you can use something like "SwitchPro Widget" from the market and select the "data connection" button to turn 3g/4g on and off, wifi on/off, etc.

Ok, good to know wifi overrides 4g. Sense..? I have no clue what that means, how do I know if I have it?

my switchpro doesnt have a 4g toggle, just a 2g/3g

So for those of you who have turned on the hot spot feature, does it show up as an access point or an ad hoc network. I haven't gotten my droid tablet to recognize ad hocs yet and it has no g3/g4 of it's own.
