Because would a full wipe not delete apps installed on the phone like BusyBox Installer?

The only app I ever really use that has Busybox is Titanium Backup, which comes bundled with Busybox so you don't even have to download a separate app :)

Well thanks to you all, I've flashed my first ROM 'BlackOut ICE' and so far so good, looks amazing... I'll test over the coming days and keep you posted.

A day on and the initial impressions were good with just a few issues:

I) I've started to notice a lag in almost everything from scrolling through the menu to making a call

3) Call quality seams to have been affected, not sure how... voices seam more tinny and louder

4) WiFi Hotspot is not working... I'm currently on Three's One Plan and used tethering to connect my laptop when out and about, so this a big must. My Laptop can see the HTC Portable Hotspot and connect to it, but it then does does not connect to the internet.

Any advice?

There might be a memory leak issue (does anyone know for sure) which would slow everything down. Rebooting should do the trick but it will just come back again after a few hours :(

A lot of the ICS ROMs have issues with the wifi hotspot. In the past if I needed to use it I would have to go back to a Gingerbread ROM in order for it to work, which was a bit of a pain. I have the One Plan too, it's very useful for taking my laptop out and about and still getting good internet speeds :)

Thanks...

Rebooting helps, but the issues does then come back

I've also noticed that calls are being dropped after 1min 40seconds...

Any advice?

My advice would be not to try to fix it. The ROM is still in development. I have a different Radio from yours and also did encounter some data signal problems. So I had to give it up after 8 or 9 days. Your Radio seems to be problematic, and so is mine, with this new ROM. I think we both best wait for the an improved version before trying to get it working perfectly.

My advice. Try another ROM. As master scotty85 taught me flashing radio's is very risky (but he walked me through the process step by step, and gave me a review after that, and I am pretty sure I will never do it again). ROM's... well D-U-R-X taught me I could flash away all I want. If I had a bad install, recovering from it takes about 5 minutes. I have not seen El Presidente drop by this thread, but he chimed in too from time to time.

What ROM? In the past two weeks I have tried three ICS ROM's, Blackout ICS, Nero 2.0 and Virtuous Infinity v1.33. If you are dead set on Sense and ICS, among the three, Virtuous Infinity v1.33 is the one which meets the requirements of a daily driver. The only issues I noticed on it were scaling issues. The Dev's are still putting final tweaks into scaling the UI designed for a qHD display to a WVGA display.

Blackout is my favorite among the three, and I see my phone retiring with that ROM. I intend to test each release and post as much useful feedback as I can to the Dev's, but I really cant use it as a daily drive yet. NERO 2.0 is like a version of Blackout with different bugs.

I think though given that you are new at this start with a known stable quantity. CDPlant gave very good advice in recommending ARHD and Virtuous Affinity. Best you see how good a ROM can be and not start your life @root with ROM's still in development. CyanogenMod 7.2 (although surprisinlgly that was where I had my biggest problem) or Ice Cold Sandwhich 8.5 (no 720p video capture though) are good safe bets to. Go that route and you will make D-U-R=X very happy.

I stated with ARHD 6.3.3 a nice stable ROM. I played with it and had fun learning how to back-up files and reinstall (Titanium backup and My Backup Root), explore the innards of my ROM (Root Explorer or ES Explorer), freeze files to free space and clean up my app drawer, play with clock speeds and voltages, install mods via zip file.... too the point where I messed it up so much, I started from scratch.

But ARHD gave me a platform to tweak and break, confident the fault was mine.

I hope I do not sound like I am lecturing, I am new at this too. Been a bit over a month. But I am worried if you start with the newly released ROM's you will be in for a bit of frustration. In my case, I now enjoy trying the new ones, when I have hours or a day or two spare looking for issues. Actually, it would not be too interesting for me if they worked perfectly. When I had my fun restore back my nice stable ROM.

Right now, I am running Virtuous Affinity, thanks to CDPlant and this thread. Has a bit more WOW factor than ARHD. Very stable. A good place to start I think.

Respectfully.

Thank you Ral… it’s amazing the support you get on this forum…

I have a few ROMs I’d like to try and think I’ll spend a while flashing them to see which I like best.

At this stage I’m looking for ones which are stable and a change from the stock 2.3.5 look, before I start experimenting on the more technical aspects of the ROMs.

ARHD, Virtuous Infinity and JellyBean Jellytime are few I’ve shortlisted for the initial experimental stage.

Has anyone tried the JellyBean ROMS?

Being able to root and flash is far more interesting then living with the stock ROMs, and I’m really looking forward to getting into this more.

So I’ll keep you all posted on my progress.

Once again, thank you everyone for the continued support…

Well, I got here, and kind of just followed the pack.

I’m looking for ones which are stable and a change from the stock 2.3.5 look

I have not tried JB... D-U-R-X might have.

If you want to really depart from the stock look, why not an AOSP or AOKP rom like Ice Cold Sandwich? It is now at 8.5 (the second final edition) and going to 8.6 in a few days or maybe a few weeks (the third final edition).

Two issues with 8.5 AFAIK:

  • video recording at 720p broken (fixed in 8.6 which is now out in beta to a lucky few).
  • If you use a lock screen widget it might not go to sleep properly. Screen turns black but it actually is displaying a black but full lit display. If you use a lock screen widget try Screen Off and Lock at Google Play AND ENABLE DELAY DEVICE LOCKING IN THE SETTINGS.

This will give you the look of a Galaxy Nexus. When I installed this ROM I got an email from Google thanking me for buying a Nexus.

Add the Nova or Apex launcher and you will get lost for days in perfecting your UI. I have Cyanogen Mod 9 (ICS) installed on a Galaxy Tab and spent a few days on the Trebuchet launcher, than a few on Nova. For awhile it looked like a Nexus 7 and than my wife installed this Jelly Bean live wallpaper. Now it has a near empty home screen so she can flick Jelly Beans around :(

There is also MIUI... have not tried this ROM's. Some say it looks like an iPhone others like a Samsung Touchwiz. Well, I am not fond of the look.

Oh, by the way Virtuous Infinity just got bumped up from Alpha to Beta, now at version 1.35.0.

I have a few ROMs I’d like to try and think I’ll spend a while flashing them to see which I like best.

Or just flash something new when you get bored :)

ARHD 6.3.3, CM7.2, ICS 8.5, Blackout ICS, Virtuous Infinity, NERO 2.0, Virtuous Affinity, Overcome ROM (SGT), CM9 (two builds) (SGT). That puts me at 10 ROM's in about 35 days or so. OH NO.

Scotty has used a couple of the JB ROM's... you may be best off trying something else at first though, as ral has said :)

EDIT - ninjad by ral! :)

A lot to take in and play about with, thanks guys

Made some changes after your post.

You are welcome. All this would not be so much fun if we did not have others to talk about it with.

So do come back. With good news or frustrations, rants or complaints. Its all good.
