Batteries with built-in flame retardant could prevent fiery mishaps

Lithium-ion batteries have a tendency to catch fire and explode when they're overheated, but a new group of researchers from Stanford University has created batteries with built-in fire extinguishers to prevent that from happening. A component called triphenyl phosphate is added to the batteries for its flame retardant properties.
