Why the huge drop when phone was asleep??

because it was awake and screen was on the whole time. Look at the solid blue lines the blue is the time the item is being used. Solid blue line for awake and screen on. Something was using the phone while it was idle.

But look at the part where the screen is off... theres a lil gap in the graph then when the screen comes back on, its dropped a good bit (faster than with screen on)...

So if it takes so much power to boot, does it use a lot of power to shut down (when you run your battery dry, does the phone save a few percent so it can shut down properly?)
And does that mean that if your calibration is off a bit, the phone could shut itself down too soon, shortening battery life?

The phone will shut itself off quite a bit before its truly out of battery. This is to protect the battery. If you completely drain your battery it will permanently damage it.

Its not really taking that much battery to boot. Battery remaining depends on quite a few factors, and history is one of them. You'll find that by rebooting a few times in a row you'll probably get a different % each time its done booting up, and it won't always be going down.

The % is an estimate of remaining battery.
As an example I just rebooted 3 times.
57%
55%
56%
57%

Google engineers have weighed in on the battery calibration (by wiping battery stats) and they say it doesnt actually do anything.

Yeah i used to recalibrate the battery meter after flashin a new rom but people now say its not necesary :)
