Help Battery Charging questions

Hi,
Bought the atrix and the HD dock a week back(bye bye iphone). Love the phone so far.

Had questions regarding battery charging; wanted to double check some of the behaviour and make sure it not an issue with the phone -->

-firstly, if the phone discharges completely, and I try to charge it through the laptop USB port, then it wont charge. Question is - if the phone discharges completely then the phone cannot be charged via the USB port in the laptop(and only through the wall power socket)

-secondly, if the phone discharges completely, and I start charging it throught the wall socket then I cannot turn on the phone till the battery shows that it is atleast 5% charged. Is that how it is, or is something wrong with the phone and I should be able to turn the phone on immediately once its plugged into the wall socket

Thanks

The reason the phone won't charge from the laptop if completely dead battery is the fact that most USB ports don't output enough amperage. From your descriptions, everything is working correctly.

You are killing the battery by discharging it completely. That is something Li-Ion and Li-Pol batteries hate - discharging them to near zero.

I know this is an old thread but I found it while searching for some battery info.

LiPo batteries in consumer devices have undervoltage protection. Empty on a LiPo/Li+ battery is actually about 3.0 volts. There is a charging controller that shuts things down when the voltage drops below this value.

It is true that if you discharge a LiPo battery beyond this point you are basically destroying the battery; it won't take a charge. However, this isn't a concern in modern consumer devices.
