Help Battery Draining Quickly

Well, the top 10% or so of any battery will fall off quicker than the middle range will be used up. This is called "surface charge".... don't get too hung up over the top few percentage points.

You should be more concerned with how many hours it will provide you with the type of usage that you need.

I ride motorcycles too. I can't see any valid reason to leave on the WiFi, Data, or Bluetooth (unless you wear an earwig BT) while riding. The GPS? Set it for Power Saving Mode. It will still give you a reasonable location within a few hundred feet which at 65 MPH is more than good enough...

The DATA is only used if you are surfing the internet.... why leave it on while it is buried in your pocket for a few hundred miles?

I turn all of that stuff off unless I need it. It turns on in about 2 seconds. Surely that is fast enough for the internet surfing we all do.

Is there an app where you can set all of that and with one click turn it all back know on? I know what you mean about use but I find it a hassle to turn all that off and then turn it on when I go to use it.

Almost, it is Battery Doctor. Install that and then go into Settings/Startup Settings, "Add Widget" and "Add Save Power Shortcut"

The Widget pops up a window that will let you toggle WiFi, Data, GPS, Sync, bluetooth, Brightness, Volume, Rotation, airplane Mode ON/OFF as you desire.

The only ones I use are DATA, WiFi, GPS, and Sync.... sometimes I turn off Bluetooth, depends on if I am using the BT headset which I do a lot.

Be sure you go through all of the Settings menus, there are several of them depending on what Mode you want to use. It is flexible.. The Whitelist in each Mode must be set...

Pay attention that the ScreenTimeOut is set for the value you want. Default is 30 seconds..... I use 10 Minutes.

That's the thing. I don't have that much. The apps are all the same. I removed a bunch today just to see. Yesterday I tried location services off all day. This morning I tried removing the SD card. None of it worked.

So far it's still horrible. Down to 90% after a few minutes off the charger. "android system" and "android os" did it all.

I'm having the same issue. I wonder if its the fingerprint lock? That's listed under (i think ) both system and OS.
I like it b.c. its much faster (for me) than pin but if it drains my battery I'll go back.

I hard reset (wipe) and only installed about half of the apps I had (all reputable big name apps, nothing sketch then or now) and the issue is minimized but "android system" is still #1, screen brightness #2 and "android OS" is #3.

30-40% of my battery eaten up between the 2 "android" items.

I had location services off since the wipe. No fingerprints setup. All major features disabled really.

If you guys are using widgets like HD Widgets that update weather, time, and location every time you wake up your phone, go into the widget program and turn that stuff down or off. It will show up as Android OS use, not the widget use on your battery stats.

Also, take a look at what programs are pushing notifications, they'll be running in the background if they are.

I'm currently trying out power saving mode (not Ultra) and at about 75% on day two, with normal use on day 1. Hoping for three full days of normal use so I can go back to my power sucking ways and be happy with a long day of heavy usage.

One very important tip for battery life is "DO NOT leave Google Map running in the background!". Also turn off GPS after using the map.

For example, if you used navigation in google map, stop it properly and back out of it. Don't just hit home button to get out of it. Otherwise it's still alive in the background eating battery juice. It will show up as high percentage of Google Play service or Android system in battery stats.

How much use is normal use for you? Checking emails, surfing some, etc??

Checking emails, texting, google searching, listening to bluetooth in my car and the occasional game or two. Generally not using my phone as my primary entertainment source, I would consider that heavy usage.

That is heavy usage. And your battery life is that good. Wow.

Keep in mind, this is on power savings, so the phone is a bit slower, but it's usable. This is really an experiment as I have no issues plugging in each night and intend to use it fully once I've seen how long I can stretch it.

I just checked my S5 to see the 'battery status'.

It is showing 68% at 1900 hours on Tuesday evening.

The last charge period ended at 0500 yesterday morning before going to work.

Yesterday's use involved a half dozen phone calls with employees, using the GPS and an app called "I Am Here" to locate myself to turn in a report of bad conditions on our county roads. (I work on a road maintenance crew).

At lunch, I turn on DATA and browse through the online forums for amusement while working on my sandwich.

After each use of an app, I back out of that app and use the Double Menu soft key to be sure all Recent Stuff is closed out.

I then hit the Battery Doctor app to turn OFF anything I had on:
Data, GPS, Sync, WiFi, Bluetooth, Rotation, etc... that Battery Doctor widget is great, but I close out its' screen when before putting the phone to sleep.

lastly I use the 2nd Battery Doctor Widget to Stop all Background Processes not needed... then I hit the Power Button and the phone goes to sleep.

This takes ten times longer to talk about than it does in practice.
Close apps,
Close Recent
Stop Background stuff
Turn off unneeded services,
Put it to sleep.

I can do all of that in about 5 seconds.....

And the result is, 68% battery after 15+24= 39 hours of use.
Checked the Notification screen just now and it reports 32 hours of battery left....

Each of us needs different things.... I do NOT need instant email, never check it on the phone....

With all of the above turned off, I still get telco calls, and Text Messages come through just fine. good enough for me..

YMMV but that is because you have more apps running than I do.

Still, I have a smartphone that will do anything I ask it to do, WHEN I have a need for it to do something. A fast click of the DATA, GPS, SYNC soft buttons on Battery Doctor's widget and it will do anything I need.

That's awesome, I will try some of that too! Incredible!
When you say stop unneeded services and background stuff, is that just through the running apps? And put it to sleep is just hitting the power button, correct, or is there a deeper sleep function?
When I am at work, 12 hour shifts, I don't need anything on on the phone, don't really need it on at all, since I can receive calls at work. Will have to set up a toggle that can do everything I want instantly when I walk into work, and then turn on what I need when I need to catch up on life.

let's get together on the phone tomorrow.... I am 30 minutes late now getting to bed.... 0500 comes fast if you are short on sleep.

"Put it to sleep".......YES, I mean hit the Power Button.....

Mean while, here are some posts I have made on the subject.

I have had massive problems with battery life on my galaxy s3, I have tried everything, turning brightness down, turning of wifi or data when not in use, automatic updates switched to off, disabling live wallpaper, charging my battery regularly. I have even tried downloading battery saving apps such as battery doctor and DU battery saver, but still nothing works, still drains far too fast, someone please help me out, I don't know why my galaxy s3 is doing this and it's so annoying that I can't play games on it for even an hour because it heats up burning hot after half an hour of use!

Don't ask if if missed out everything coz I've done it all turn on power saving mode, turn off GPS, controlling the apps I downloaded, searching on internet how to save battery on galaxy s3 but still absolutely no difference and now my s3 battery is fully low and just got it charged at 8:00

There is no eye tracking tech on the galaxy s3 and I don't know what else to do with the battery life, it keeps going down every hour I go on it

Plus I live in the UK and there is no Verizon stores or carriers there and also I own a galaxy s3 not galaxy s5, I think the galaxy s3 consumes too much power secretly without me knowing

Sorry not read all replays...

Turn off everything you can eg smart scroll air touch etc and try an app called greenify it hibernates apps for its pretty good..

Ok I now have that app but that too still does not improve anything, battery life is still going down too fast, any other recommendations?
