Help battery draining while USB tethering?

I noticed this today, I use my phone to USB tether, and after coming home from running errands today my phone was at about 80% battery life, so I put it on the USB cord that it came with and connected it to my computer so I could check email and facebook, etc. Well after a few hours I took my phone off the charger and the battery had dropped to 40%. How is this possible, I know tethering uses power from the phone, but if its connected to the computer and charging as well, why is it still draining my battery? my droid never had this problem and i tethered all the time, is it possible that I have a bad battery?

generally speaking the phone will use more power to tether than it will to charge when connected to a computer....(same with wifi tether).

for wifi tether (if i can) i plug the phone into the wall and its either neutral on charge or will charge it a bit while acting as a hotspot

ok so then its normal, i just worry about it continuously charging and draining while tethering will eventually damage the phone or battery, i have noticed the phone is fairly warm while tethering

yeah it ll get warm tethering, dont worry :)

and unless you plan on keeping this phone for 3-4 years i wouldnt worry about tethering hurting it
