[Battery] Fixes and Tips

ok guys... <snip>

4. Thinking about buying one of these three batteries:

  • OEM TP2 1500 battery... can any confirm extra battery life? Does it not close all the way? (any pictures?) Worth it for 17 bucks?
  • Seido 1750... or do these batteries end up giving less mAh then stock?
  • Or just wait for the OEM 2150 to be released (how much bulk will it add??)

Thanks so much in advance
@ Bakan: here are my stats using a HTC 1500mAh OEM battery for the TP2 but in the Incredible of course:

I removed the phone from the charger just after 7am yesterday morning (June 2nd 2010):

Yes there's a small gap when using this battery, but it's HARDLY noticeable, IMHO Definitely worth $15-17 bucks.

UpTime: 28:03:07
AwakeTime: 6:49:37
Battery %:3 %
Wifi: On (Only on for 10 hours or os)
GPS: On
Bluetooth: Off

Unplugged time: 1 day 4 hrs 2 mins 51 secs
  • Cell standby: 32%
  • Phone idle: 30%
  • Android system: 19%
  • Voice Calls: 6%
  • Display: 6%
  • Wifi: 5%
  • Dialer: 2%

My usage pattern: light to moderate usage for me. Basically a fairly even mix of reading emails (30), calls (25 mins), texts (20), android market downloads (2 apps), uz media player background videos (2 hours), listened to a couple audio podkasts, used touiteur for about 30 minutes, listened to music for about an hour, and composed a couple of emails throughout the day.

Wow. This completely destroyed my stock battery. I am VERY impressed. :D

where did you buy it? And does it snap closed completely? Thanks for the info

Anybody else taken aback when the manual said to think about replacing your battery after 8 months of use? Is that really the expected life on these things? I'm really confused when my old Samsung phone, which I used for over two years, could get me days if not a week of usage w/o having to charge. It's very very small too. Of course I could be showing my ignorance of batteries. My old samsung used a 3.7V Liion polymer battery and it was awesome.

this may be old news, but i was recently very relieved to find that most of my battery/awake time problems were related to friendstream. just by disabling my flickr sync i cut my awake time in half. i haven't disabled my facebook sync for friendstream because i actually use it a lot. i find that after i use friendstream it continues to pull a LOT of juice. lately i've been rebooting the phone after using it, which sucks. but...

as of right now: uptime 5:53 - awake time 00:13

pretty effective.

i like the way friendstream works, but in terms of battery life, it SUCKS - literally.

Not really, I have seen this with other devices, specifically my Ipod Touch. Although it has been removed from newer manuals, the IPOD touch manual that came with mine last year had a similar time frame...

And that 8 months is a guide and does not mean the battery *needs* to be replaced, it just means that it may degrade or begin to degrade by then and will not perform as well as new. I would not worry too much about it.

Shouldn't be the case under normal use. Li-Ion batteries should last 2-3 years. Of course, doing things like draining them completely or charging them 24/7 will hurt that lifespan.

Your old phone battery lasted so long because the phone itself used much less power.

If you want to read up on general facts about batteries, check out: Welcome to Battery University

Warning: You will learn a lot of facts there that contradict many of the observations reported on this forum and others like it. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not anecdotal evidence gathered in uncontrolled environments trumps physics and chemistry.

EDIT: Just to clarify, after 8 months your battery WILL NOT last as long as it used to. One of the negatives of Li-Ion in general is that they start to deteriorate the moment they come off the assembly line and there's nothing you can do about it. But, to give any sort of date that you "should" replace it is foolish. How much yours deteriorates will vary compared to other users. When it no longer lasts long enough for you to use it comfortably, then it's time to replace it.

Never worry about sharing your experiences with people, this is how we all learn, from each other...!!

Personally I like seeing affirmation like this because it reinforces people's theories!!

love the phone but the battery does suck. i'm just hoping the extended battery comes out sometime soon because it'll be an instant purchase. i bought the 1500 and i did see some improvement but most days my phone will only last about 8-10 hours since i use slacker radio at the gym. if i don't use the radio then i can get about 10-12 hours.

i put my phone in heavy use last week for memorial day weekend since i had to go to a wedding. car charger + one of these (Fueltank - Clean Resusable Portable Power - Callpod) saved my phone from dying. it's a combo i think i'm going to be bringing with me everywhere now. using the GPS kills the phone so quick but it's just so useful to have (goodbye garmin).

@Bakan:

I bought mine from ebay: this seller called SigmaCellular particularly. Also the phone completely snaps shut. It just has a tiny gap on only ONE of the sides in my experience though others have noticed a gap on the bottom.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I'm using my phone a good amount (texting, having twitter update every 5 min, gps on) and I'm getting roughly 10% per hour. This is my 3rd day with the phone so if it doesn't start improving I might go ahead and buy a larger battery.

ok, just wanted to quickly give you guys a quick fix i found that helped my battery alot. first off, let me say, I haven't really had any problems with the battery (I can usually get around 12 hours or so) but the other day I got an email from google reminding me that I had latitude on and that I should check my privacy settings (I didn't even know lattitude was running). I went in and turned it off and my battery life jumped dramatically. I can't say for sure how much it improved, it has only been off for a few days but the first day I had it off I went about 38 hours before I charged it, at that time I had about 30% left. now thats not fully accurate since I had it charging while playing pandora on my way to work and back (about 45 minutes) but I can say it lasts alot longer than it did before shutting latitude off...just something to consider

Here is what I'm getting.

Batery is now at 84%
Up Time 3:13
Awake Time 35
Android System 37%
Cell Standby 25%
Phone Idle 17%
Display 12%
Voice Calls 7%
Mail 2%

Is there a way I can lower the Android System and Cell Standby %? I noticed that Bakan above only uses 19% for his Android System.

Above - Evilotto stated he shut off lattitude. How do I do this?

Thanks!

I think I know why my battery may drain faster on some days then others. When I open task manager I notice that google maps is running in the background sometimes. How can I stop this from happening without deleting this app?

The way to "lower Android" is to use your phone less. Android includes all the basic functions of the operating system itself. Cell Standby is always on, this is your phone maintaining a connection with a tower. You could shut it off, but then you wouldn't be able to receive phone calls or texts until you turned it back on.

You can't just compare your percentages to somebody else, because they are based entirely off of what you have actually done with your phone since you last took it off the charger.

To turn off Latitude, just open Maps and hit the Menu button. You will see a Join or Exit Latitude button (if it says Join, you're already logged out).

So I'm having some battery life issues and I'm hoping someone here can help. I've done some of the recommended fixes, but I can't figure out what the issue is.

Some information that may help figure out what the problem is:

1. According to SpareParts, my partial wake usage for "Android System" is near 100%. No specific apps are more than a small percentage, though.

2. Also, according to SpareParts my time without sleep is 100%.

3. According to the About Phone, Battery Use, my stats are:

Cell standby: 34%
Phone idle: 31%
Android System: 16%

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the thread I posted right above you. I had the same issue where Awake time = Up Time. You can see what I did and my results.

Ah balls... I like beautiful widgets... Any other good weather/clock widgets that have a 4x1 option and can be skinned?

I know a lot of people that are running it just fine. I also think that it's a problem with BW and another app I had (how they talk/work together) since I had BW for a couple of weeks without any issues. Just try uninstalling it on your phone, then restart it and see if that fixes the awake time. If not, just look at what I did and try it on a few of your other most recent apps. Your phone could be another app, so just give it a shot and narrow it down, you can always reinstall the ones that weren't the issue!

Make sure you let us know what you find.

EDIT: Also, if it is Beautiful Widgets, make sure to email the Devs and let them know. Hopefully if there are a few of the same complaints they will try to fix it and we'll be able to download it again soon!
