[Battery] Fixes and Tips

I have a very simple view. The 1300 battery in the Eris was not great. The 1300 in the Inc is not that great either. No faulty software or hardware. The battery just isn't enough for the phone.

People who travel or are in a marginal signal area will probably experience worse than normal battery life. Cell standby seems to be at the top of the list almost always.

The iPhone suffers from the same problem. Fortunately Inc users have options when it comes to a better battery.

OK, so i realize that the phone will use less battery in airplane mode. But does it also require a lot of energy to switch the airplane mode on and off?

My question comes down to this: If I am riding on a subway for 30 minutes (No signal there, and i think the weaker the signal is, the more battery power my phone will use trying to seek signal?), will it help me save battery to use airplane mode during the 30 minutes i am in the subway? will it not make too much difference? or will it actually cost me more battery power to switch it back and forth?

This charging technique you guys are using sounds like a way to possibly over charge your battery to me. Your phone knows how much charge the battery needs and charges it until it gets to that point. It then remembers the charge and won't charge again right away. I think turning the phone off your essentially tricking it and it doesn't know it just charged. That extra 10 or 15 minutes is what it takes the phone to analyze the battery and realize that it's already charged before it stops charging again. I highly doubt you're really gaining anything and possibly over charging the battery. The battery may not allow over charging but if that's the case you're not gaining anything. Those minutes are just the phone realizing the battery is charged. You can put pretty much any kind of battery on a charger that was just charged to full and it will charge again for a few minutes before it realizes it's already full.

that doesnt make sense to me. the battery has safe-holds that do not allow the battery to be overcharged, yet when i turn my phone off and plug it in, i get an extreme boost in battery life (2-3 more awake hours) that i have been the past week just charging with my phone on... therefore the battery must not either stopping before completely charged because of a timer or the trickle effect imo

You should save on battery life doing this as your phone won't be searching for a signal constantly.

It will save. No doubt about it. Probably the most energy expended coming out of airplane is re Aquiring a signal. But it would be doing that the whole time your in the subway anyways

For what it's worth, I'd you're in a spot with spotty service, that'll kill your battery. At home mine lasts about five hours with heavy user. At work where it's constantly searching for a signal it drains lot faster.

Or you could just turn the phone off by long pressing the power switch. This will also shut down any apps that may be running. It takes a little longer to boot up, but it saves even more battery life.

Probably won't be doing that...as when i'm in the subway, i find ways to entertain myself with my incredible even without the signal! :D

the steps helped me thats for sure. I simply just turned the phone off when the light turned green and then it charged another 20 minutes.

This definatley fixed the issue where it drops from 100% to 90% in 10 minutes. I am still testing to see if it fixed the overall low battery performance but so far it is looking better. Before i was lucky if i could squeeze 10 hours with meduim use and this morning after trying the steps i am on almost 4 hours with only 20% battery drain with medium use. Not perfect but definately better.

Airplane mode definitely saves battery..I put it in airplane mode every night at 11:00 until morning about 6:30 ...with only half battery left at 11:00..it lasts until morning

possible but if I charge the same battery in an Eris it will sit on 100% for a while after throwing it in the inc. Charge in the incredible and I'm down to 90% in about 10 minutes. Something ain't right.

That's it? I lose maybe 6% over a period of 8-9 hours of sleeping with wifi and auto-sync on.

Under normal circumstances I would agree with you but the fact remains that for both the Eris and the Incredible, if I perform this technique, I get 3 more hours of battery life per day. There is something in these phones that is preventing them from being charged to an *actual* 100%

Now for those of you that are having problems seeing results, try this:

Tonight when you put your phone on charge, do not turn it off, put it in airplane mode and put it to sleep -> tomorrow when you wake up, do NOT unplug it, but wake it up and power it down. Once powered off the LED will go red again. Wait till it is green, power it on and don't unplug it till it is up and running.

See what happens.

You need to turn off your phone for a full charge. You do not get a full charge when charging the phone while it's off.

when on, it will say charged/green. Turn if off and put it back on and it will start charging for another oh I don't know, 20+ minutes in the wall.

This has been touched on previously but I am letting more know.

I was looking through and I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but this is how I solved my battery woes..

I have both the standard and extended inocell from seidio. Neither seemed to be making a difference with my battery life and a friend gave me this suggestion and it has made ALL the difference for both of us.

1. With the phone on, charge the battery until it says its full [for those without the widget, when the green light is on]. At this point shut off the phone and notice that it will go back into orange and continue charging. This will keep going for about a half hour and then turn green when complete.
2. Unplug your phone. Turn the phone back on. Drain a little bit. I gave mine 5-10%. Repeat step one.
3. Do this a total of 2-3 times....
4. Enjoy your newfound battery life...

And if anyone can explain why this is, I'd be apperciative. It sounds crazy and I didn't believe it until I tried it and it made ALL the difference. Especially since I would unplug my phone and instantly be down to 96-97%. Now it actually drains like I would expect it to.

both are not a FIX as both have reports of not working for people. I know for sure i have charged with phone off and it still has dropped rapidly.

i think its a software problem that has to be fixed with an update

That is interesting it hasn't worked for others. It worked for me and other Incredible users.

Try it a couple more times.

I know I cannot get more than 4-5 hours of standby out of this thing....

I consider that an issue and need am looking for any solution at this point.

A lot of these phone are not going to sleep. Check your up time and awake time if they are the same your battery is draining quickly. Every time I reboot mine gets stuck in awake mode. I have to put it on airplane for like 2 mins and it goes back to normal. I can get over 24 hrs with heavy use when active after airplane mode. I honestly think you are solving your problem with the reboot not the extra charging.

Do yuo do this multiple times in the same day or just multiple times over a few days to maximize?

I also get the rapid battery drain from 100% to about <90% after only 30 minutes of little to no use after i pull it off the charger in the AM (i use it as an alarm clock so charging it while off is not an option)

I would be OK with even charging it while off for 20 min in the AM if it would get me through the day, although that would seem to be a pain in the arse if i had to do it EVERY day

One thing i DID notice was that i put my phone on my carger on my way into work (it charged it from 85% which it was after 45 min of little use in the AM to 100% in my 20 min ride) and it lasted me to the end of the day with above avg to heavy use.

I've been throwing it on the charger when i get a chance now and it SEEMS to be holding a charge better.

I'll try the "Charge when off after night of charging while on" trick and report back..

not hopeful...but hey...worth a shot.

I read about this the other day so I tried it this morning. The phone was on the charger, powered off for a good 20 minutes after the green indicator turned on while the phone was on the charger powered on.

I also got phenomenal battery life today. I was on the phone very little but the battery didnt' go below 80%. Normally I'm in the red by the time I go to sleep.

Tried this method today and I'm beyond impressed....

Currently @ 90%:
Up time: 8:31:10
Awake Time: 0:12:47

Been on standby all day... first time I could go all day and still be above 20%.

Lets hope the next OTA fixes the misleading full charge issue.

Anyone report it to hTc yet officially? Response?

I have to agree with jayjay here - I gave this a thorough try today and my battery indicator only just turned yellow (30%) within the last ten minutes which is at least 3 hours better than I would have gotten previously...

Battery's at 30% with 14 hours of uptime (and 14 hours off the charger) and 4:35 of that awake, wifi on the whole time... very impressed.
