Help Battery goes flat very quickly

Lurker
The battery on my HTC Desire A8181 keeps going flat.

I have done loads of research but cannot seem to fix the problem with my battery.

Basically what happens is the battery does not charge more than about 5%. As it starts charging and after about 15min it flashes up saying fully charged. I have downloaded an app to see the battery stats. It shows the battery as fully charged but i know its only got about 5%. It only last a very short time before it goes flat. About 5 min watching videos.

I have rooted my phone so i can delete the bat file to reset it.
I bought a higher capacity battery from ebay but it will not charge it.

I have done a soft reset and that has not helped.

Im at the point of jacking it in and buying a new phone but would rather fix it than throwing it away.

I have tried the procedure of charging it in certain ways to make the battery last longer.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Which ROM are you using? The extended batteries are usually no better than the originals & often have different charging characteristics. For instance AdamG developed a patch for his Oxygen ROM for charging non stock batteries.

HTC now don't recommend the special charging method as over time it does more harm than good.

Gingerbread 2.3.3

Basically my phone will only charge about 5% then it will suddenly flash up 100%, after this it will not charge anymore.

I have been using 2.3.3 for a while then a couple of weeks ago my phone just stopped charging properly.

TBH it sounds to me like the battery is dead - a cell failed or something like that. The 3rd party battery not charging at all sounds like something different, probably some incompatibility if it doesn't charge at all. Unfortunately I can't think of any way of testing this apart from a third battery :(
