My s3 has started to die all the time while on 37%. if left on stand by it will die at 1% but while i am using it either texting or listening to music, it always dies at 37%. does anyone know what the problem could be? any advice is really appreciated.

Hi MegannMac18 and welcome to AF!
To me it sounds more like a faulty/bad battery, than a hardware or software issue with your S3... I would recommend replacing the battery and go from there.
A bad battery can cause all kinds of weird device issues and problems, just like the one your experiencing now.

I agree with xdrc45 sounds like a bad battery. Before you go buy one if you know someone with s3 try using theres and swapping yours into there phone and see what goes on. Or maybe your local cell phone shop will allow you to do it. You could also try a battery recalibration which is:

1 Let the phone die plug it into charger but not while its on and charge to 100%.
2 Then let the battery die down again and once again charge it to 100% while the phone is off and go from there and see how it goes.
