Battery issue

Does anyone recognise the symptoms of what is wrong with my phone?

I used my phone a few days ago at work, took it out of airplane mode as I always keep it in this mode when its in my pocket. Full battery. Listening to 5 minutes of TuneIn Radio while reading tweets and a quick check on FB notifications to see what family are up to.

Then all of a sudden alert on screen saying 5% or less of battery remaining. So had to exit everything and shut down as it would have done this anyway after a couple of minutes.

Then later on in the day I was taking a quick break, I decide to try turning my phone back on. It comes on! So I go into the setting to check phone status, and under battery it has 89% of power remaining!

What gives?

Is this a fault with the battery or phone? Or both?

I am experiencing the same situation all the time in that it runs out of power very quickly. After only 20 minutes max of being unplugged which is dreadful.

Do I just need to replace the battery and if so, can I get one with a battery capacity that wont die on me after only two years?

I have a Motorola Defy Running Android 2.3

Likely it is the battery. Sounds like the built-in charging control chip is bad.

You can try doing the spin test to confirm if it's the battery. (Spin the battery on a smooth, flat surface)
If it spins, it's inflated which would likely cause the issues you have been having.

Mine did that too but I had owned it for a long time at that stage and I noticed it looked pregnant when I took it out of the phone to replace it with a new one
