Battery Life Experience

During that particular snapshot, the usual - business email and calendar use, texting, forum posting, forum management from my mobile browser, a bit of Netflix (to Chromecast, so my phone is just the browser and remote control) and a few phone calls.

If you choose to manage notifications and location so everything isn't running wastefully all of the time, apps tend to behave rather well.

By manage location you mean within the individual apps or is there a way to manage which apps use it in Android like there is on iOS?

I tend to keep location services off, and then tell browsers not to try it - otherwise, they'll tend to babble in the background looking for a service that's never going to happen.

I do need location for weather. For that I tell my app to use location and specifically GPS when available (Transparent Clock Weather by Droid27) and then set a polling rate I'm OK with, that's every 3 hours or if I specifically tap to get an update.

Sometimes, you just have to use location on - Maps, that sort of thing. OK, I turn it on when prompted and turn it off when done.

I'm not all paranoid about my location, it's just been my experience that that is just a wasteful processed.

Sadly, I give up Google Now by turning it off, but I've never really missed it.

ymmv

I see. I mostly use it for Google Now so that could be my issue there. I've been restarting the phone once every three days or so and have been seeing much better battery performance. I miss the granular notification and location service controls of iOS, but maybe L will have better control over those kinds of services :)

Thanks for the tip!

Got the phone last saturday and drained it to about 10% I believe before fully charging. Battery is awesome for me. Moderate to Heavy use and I get at least 12hrs before even hitting 40%. Pretty crazy coming from my GS3 which was maybe 10hrs before needing to charge around 20%.

Oh you power hungry folks. I am not as powerful as EarlyMon, but I do have one exchange account set for push. GPS and WiFi on all the time. I use Apex launcher, no BlinkFeed; albeit running the same ROM as pup. I have been getting a fairly constant two days between charges the whole time I have had this phone.

This is a fairly good representation of my power.

How...? I'm at 40% after 14-16 hours. Not complaining but I feel like I'm doing something wrong. GSam says most of my usage is from the mediaserver service. From listening to audio podcasts I'm assuming.

I believe you assume correctly. I had about 30% yesterday when I got home, but put in the earphones and started mowing the lawn and two hours later, I was well under 10%.

I can tell you all this much if you work in a building without great reception indoors your battery will take a hit. I saw a huge difference after being in a building with good reception vs spotty. I can get my phone to last for 16-20 hours a day on one charge. I can't wait for the M9!

My parents got the S5 because they were told the battery life is better. That's a huge lie. The M8 was coded to sip battery power. And the next version of Android is going to get even better.

Why haven't Apple learned like HTC? How is an iphone 6 going to make it with a small battery? They are insane.

You can avoid that by going on wifi (if it's available, of course). Alternatively, if you value battery life over receiving e-mail/Facebook/other updates or using any sort of network-involved activity, you can put it in airplane mode.

You are correct sir. But on military bases none of the buildings have WiFi. I experimented with the power saver and super power saver modes and it did not seem to be worth the hastle. So I will leave 3G on due to group messaging here or there but due to our thick cement walls the signal is spotty. But I have my radios setup to go to sleep when inactive.

I work with two people who have a note and an iphone. They have to bring a charger to work but I do not. I'm on Sprint and I actually prefer to keep my phone attached to my 5 GHZ WiFi connection when I'm home. Don't have to worry about late group text messages from friends when I'm using WiFi enabled calling/texting.

Here are my stats. Notice the held awake time. I think the reason the battery dies to fast is because the phone is kept up even when the screen us off. I'm happy with my battery for now but I still have other stuff to check to even reduce my held awake time.

Try out Wakelock Detector, it's pretty good.

Not to crap on cornflakes, but the picture showing average charge lasting 2 days, also says right below that, average screen time of 2 hours. Maybe I don't understand how that app works. But it seems anyone could get 2 days out of a charge if they only had the screen on for an hour a day.

Not sure how you're doing it, I only wish I could get this kind of battery life.

Check my battery life out!

Thoughts or recommendations??

I think close to 8 hrs is the norm. I know for a fact Google+ does things in the background. That's why it's disabled. And location services is another one.

I honestly do not know how much Location Services has to do with battery drain. Why? Because I never turn them off. Maybe I'll try it and see one day.

Once never turned off location services because Google Now uses them. I've always been able to get through a whole day.

When I first got my phone when it first released location services were activating and so was Google+ according to GSAM. I'm a control freak and I don't like my phone doing something I do not care for. When I'm at work or flying I don't need it to be turning on for no apparent reason. I work in a building without great reception and you're not going to get GPS indoors because we have very thick cement walls. If I need GPS, I turn it off/on myself. If you look at the screen shot there is a battery saving mode for location services. Not to mention I work for the government and I don't want them or Google knowing my location. I like being incognito.. LOL.

I use Google Now but it's not permitted to locate me. I usually know where I am...LOL

My Verizon M8 had amazing battery life, I could go through almost two full days of minimal to normal use. After installing 4.4.3, my battery is at 34% by 4PM after starting at 100% in the morning.

SOMETHING is causing this...not my imagination. I want 4.4.2 for verizon on my NON ROOTED phone!

How can I get 4.4.2 back??? This is insane...I turned location services off, brightness...etc..

but the fact remains...I use my phone NO differently than before 4.4.3 and now my battery suffers.

Who has the fix? THANKS!!!

Thank you for this information. I think judging from it, I may just stay at 4.4.2.

As for your problem, it's kind of a subject for a different thread because if it can be done it is quite complicated, i.e. it would require rooting and s-off.

Now here's a little sample of what Viper 1.8 can do using extreme power saving mode during the night and over a weekend:
