Battery life post ICS update?

No difference for me on 4G. Much better if I just leave it on 3G.

Sync is off, using it the way I did with GB and it's quite a bit worse. I see someone with 17hrs and that has to be either a Maxx or someone who uses their phone VERY little. No way it'll stay charged that long with regular use.....and have that much batt left.

Think what we need here is a bit of true comparison. I'm using JuiceDefender to keep the screen very low, use Lookout to watch for viruses, a weather widget and just the regular other stuff that runs in the background. I always keep an eye on the tasks running and clear em out when I can. I still don't get anywhere NEAR what some of you claim.

I was a little disappointed on the first two charges after my upgrade, but things seem to be back to normal now :

I charged my DRM to 100% before I went to bed. I then let it sit off the charger overnight. When I got up this morning it was down to 77%. Using the app CPU Spy, I can see the DRM slept for only 6 minutes and used the 300 MHz speed of the cpu for over 8 hours. I also have the app BadA** Battery Monitor installed and it only says the kernel is at the top of the cpu usage list. The app Better battery Stats tells me under kernel wakelocks that something called rx_wake kept it awake for over 8 hours. If I can find what's causing that, I might have something. Off to google rx_wake and see what I can come up with.

Hmmm. rx_wake seems to be related to wifi. I keep my wifi on all the time as I have it at home and at work. I just shut it off to see what happens (I have unlimited data).

I'm curious. Some people have reported poor battery life while others have reported great battery life. How's your battery life and to you keep wifi on or off?

A coworker has the regular Razr and he says his battery life is horrible after the update. But he also said its because his phone is locked into 4G. He lives in a fringe area and usually stays in 3G at his home. Anyone else not able to toggle out of 4G? He said VZW is sending him a new device.

Mine is great after the upgrade. I did not even have to freeze any stuf using TiB and still nothing is draining my batt.

As I posted earlier, I am getting HORRIBLE battery life on my Razr thin. I had GREAT battery life before. I am now getting 50% after about 4 hrs, when it use to be more like 12 hrs or more before it got down to 50%. I am using Smart Actions just like before where when the screen goes off, data and sync wifi are shut down..still with the update it isn't doing anything.

I did do a factory reset the other day and it still is crap and I am using the phone the same as before the update. My screen usage % before the update was low 30's to high 30's, never over 40. It is now upper 60's, 70's and even low 80's.

Please, any suggestions????? I am at a loss!!

If i were you i would try flashing the kernel from the new.214 leak.

yeah, I did the FDR yesterday and I am still draining pretty fast. Wasn't ICS supposed to drastically IMPROVE battery life? Between this forum and Moto's forum, battery life seems to be a big issue.

Moto will most likely release a patch that fixes the battery. I remember something similar with the X2.. enough people complained about the hit to battery life when they upgraded to GB and like 3 or 4 weeks later Moto released an update that fixed it.

Do you keep wifi on all the time? A few posts back I mentioned the possibility that it might have something to do with that. I've had my wifi off now for a couple of hours and have seen an improvement, although it's still too early to be sure.

Do you keep your wifi on? I'm starting to think that may be an issue (see my post from earlier this morning). I've had mine off for a couple of hours and it seems to have made a difference although it's still too early to be sure.

I applied my upgrade on Tuesday of this week, and since then, my battery life has decreased.

At the end of each day, with average use, my battery would be between 50 and 60%. Since the update, it's been in the 30's and 40's.

I keep Wifi turned on all the time. I have a smart action set for my home and when it detects my home's wifi, it turns off cellular data, gps and bluetooth.

One thing I noticed was that I was getting constant 'alerts' of available wifi networks, something I didn't get previously. I just checked the wireless settings and it had 'notify when protected network is available' enabled. I disabled that feature.

I think its constant refreshing of available networks was helping to drain the battery. After another day or two, we'll see if that was the major culprit for my additional battery drain.

I just looked in wireless settings and couldn't find that setting. Can you give more specific navigation to get there? I am getting frequent notifications and I would like them stopped.

Thanks,

Gary

I had turned that off a few days ago. It didn't help. So far totally turning off wifi looks like it's made a big difference.

I was just looking at the setting for this (BTW, you get to it from:

Menu Button -> System Settings -> Wifi -> Menu Button -> Advaced.)

There is another setting in there called Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep. Mine is set to always. I'll have to experiment with that next. Other choices are only when plugged in and never.

The drain appears to be during use, so could be the kernel..... Chicken :)

No drain during sleep for my Razr.

Historically using wifi, when available, is a huge battery saver for Android devices. Since your cellular radio is constantly having to ping towers and transmit data back and forth. Wifi doesn't need to do this since it connects once and no longer needs to look for a better signal.

Leaving it on when not connected can drain the battery though, since the wifi radio is constantly looking for something to connect to.

It is very odd that some of you are seeing problems due to wifi. This could very well be a bug in the update. If it is, it is something you need to be reporting to Verizon tech support so they are aware of the issue and can report it up the ladder.

I never use Wi-Fi, so no, It is never on. I can't seem to figure out whats draining it so quickly.. kinda sux actually. I'm gonna give it a couple days and hope it improves. I might let it drain fully tonight and then charge it and see if that helps.

How do I do that? Not to tech savy!

I have a thread in the all things root section. I put it here first because you dont have to be rooted to install it but alas, it was moved.

Its simple really if you can download a utility in the link, turn debugging on, put phone in fastboot. Then flash the. 214 boot image.
There is an option in the utility to go back to. 211 also.

my Maxx is 'stock'.

the first day with the new software and a full charge, i got a total of 11 hours use.

with the second full charge, i got a total of 81 hours.

and with my third full charge, so far, i've gotten 35 hours and 15 mins, and i still have 77% left in the tank!

hell, at this rate, i'll be at 200 hours per charge by the end of next week! lol

and again, now that my connectivity issue seems to be a thing of the past, i'm loving this phone!
