My problem isn't ICS related directly, because the issue started pre-update. However, I thought I'd get more views here as opposed to starting a new thread.
About a month ago, my battery life suddenly dropped off dramatically. When I first got the phone, I was getting 18-20 hours of moderate-heavy use on a regular work day, and I'd go home at night (after 10-12 hours off charger) with 60% battery left, easily. Since then, I'm lucky to get through a 10 hour workday and have 30% left. I'd guess I'm getting close to 12-13 hours now.
I've uninstalled some apps, checked my FB and Twitter updates to see if they're refreshing themselves. They're not. I've also let the phone die completely, powered down and done a full recharge. No help.
Suggestions?
Have you done a factory reset?
I have not. I was trying to avoid that, seeing as how it would wipe my device completely, correct?
Bear with me, I'm still new to Android. Just made the switch from an iPhone about 2 months ago...
Yes, a reset would wipe the device. You have the option of wiping the internal storage or not though.
After an OS update it is a good idea to get the old data out and make way for the new. It is like an oil change for your phone.
If you want to try avoiding it, you can start by looking at the battery under settings to see what is using your battery the most. This is always a good start. I'd also pay attention to your cell reception, if it is poor this could be part of the problem as well.
The top two battery users for me are display and Android OS, at 53% and 23% respectively. Per other advice I've seen, my brightness is turned down to around 30-35% and the "auto-adjust" feature is off.
Next closest users are Phone Idle at 6% and Voice Calls at 5%...
Also, my cell reception is pretty damn good. I have 4G basically all day, maybe with the exception of 10 minutes total throughout the day...not to mention, my cell reception hasn't changed in the last month from what it was the first month I had the phone, when the battery life was great.
The battery drop you described usually points to an installed app or changed setting, it usually isn't so drastic though. The other "normal" problem is coverage or reception changes in your area. Companies adjusting towers or trying to tweak things can lead to huge swings in coverage. I had this with At&t once and it was so bad that we lost all service at our house, which led to us changing carriers.
As far as screen, Os and phone go, those are the standard battery users on an Android phone. Anything topping them in usage percent is a typically a serious problem.
By chance, are you using a task killer or manager?
I do have GO Task Manager running. Don't use it very often, but I left the widget running when I changed over to GO Launcher.
I'm not sure how much it would be a factor if you aren't using it, but task killer/manager apps are notorious for battery problems. They aren't really useful since OS version 2.2, but they are even more useless with ICS.
I have to admit that I am at a loss. If you don't have any apps using that much of the battery, your cell signal is good, you usage isn't different and it was happening before the update I'm not sure what would be causing it.
I am noticing a huge difference in battery life on my Maxx between setting it down (on my desk at work, coffee table, etc.) and keeping it in my pocket throughout the day. In either case, when I review the battery stats the phone is awake a little bit. Yet, while the phone is in my pocket the battery discharges around ~5%/hr, whereas sitting next to me the discharge drops to about ~1.5%/hr.
I'm guessing the difference stems from changes to signal strength and other processes in the background. I turned off Smart Actions thinking that that might be causing this, but the app made no difference. Is anyone else seeing this types of changes?
What up everyone.
So last night I downloaded the ICS update for my Motorola Droid Razr MAXX, and everything seemed to work just fine. So I turned off the phone and put it on the charger for the night and hit the hay.
Woke up this morning, turned on the phone, and after like ten minutes it said I was down to 90% already when I had just sent one text. Now, normally it would take a good 20 minutes of web browsing for me to put any kind of dent in the MAXX battery, so I'm wondering if ICS is doing something to it?
Also, the battery info says I have like 50 minutes left on my battery....at 90%....my two year old MacBook Pro does better than that lol.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
