Battery Life Thread

A good source of battery information is the web site of a battery rebuilder.

Although you might think these guys just want to sell you something, this article basically tells you why they can't rebuild Lithium-Ion batteries and it quells a number of misconceptions.

What about rebuilding Li-Ion batteries ?

Basically, Li-ion batteries are born to die and start to deteriorate the second they leave the production line. I don't know that charging methods will change that very much, but I did Google an article that explains the technical considerations and shows the life span of a number of smartphone batteries.

How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries – Battery University

Also, because the battery pack includes control circuitry I don't think the phone sees the actual charge state of the cells, but rather a window into a portion of their capacity. The Prius battery indicator is like this, so when you see the battery indicate full charge it's really only at about 65-70% of its actual cell capacity for example.

Deeper discharge cycles shorten the life of the battery, so beware.

The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery.

Hope this helps.

Do you find any risk to using the cheap China made batteries?. I sometimes read in the newspaper that batteries can catch on fire.Which company do you recommend? I have the EVO shift.

I purchased a seidio at first I did not see a noticeable difference but after installing juice defender I get close to 2 days

After the new upgrade the other day, my phone stays awake way too long. Ouit of 39 hours of up time, I have 33 hours awake, which is not right.

I remember running into a problem with a 3rd party flashlight program that was causing long awake times back when I had my EVO and upgraded to Froyo.

I don't have any widgets on my home screen, I have verified Google Talk does not auto sign in, I have weather and news and Facebook set to manual sync.

My exchange syncing is setup for 15 minutes peak and 60 minutes off peak.

I do have around 60 apps installed, so there are too many to list.

I am also running the paid verision of Juice Defender which shows me at roughly 1.90 times better battery life than if I did not have the program, but I am not sure how subjective that reading might be from them....

Any assistance or similar experience sharing would be appreciated.

Also, I do have the EVO Shift and not the EVO as my profile stated.

EDIT: It looks like I found my culprit. I have CSDevCTRL installed to basically flash my camera flash on an inbound call, that is not compatible with 2.3.3. The developer stated works and tested on 2.2 only. After I turned off the program, my awake time issues goes away.
