Battery problems, quirks and issues: Read first.

After killing mine last night(almost, I ended up losing radio and just charged it) and I've been off about an hour with light usage and the battery says 90%.

I noticed the same thing satinkzo, it lasted a LONG time after hitting 5%. I'm sure that after a complete kill tonight it'll be just fine. The battery tender just needs to learn where the upper and lower limits of the battery are.

very interesting. as i have this problem on my windows 7 laptop. it was giving me replace battery now icon and the battery meter would drop rapidly. i prevented it from shutting down and the battery ran for 1hr 45 minutes on 3% percent. theres still no fix for my win7 machine so thats not good.i wonder if this is the similar problem going on with the phones.

The sheer number of responses here already stating something along the lines of 'the battery drained quickly and then lasted forever at 15%' makes it pretty obvious this is a monitoring bug and not necessarily a battery problem.

These things are like little laptops in the palm of your hand - I'm truly greatful if I can get 9-10 hours of even standby for a device like this, my real laptop doesn't last a whole hour!

If this is a software issue, Samsung/Sprint have heard all about it already and will hopefully release a patch. Otherwise, this looks like something that will go down in history as an 'odd quirk' of this phone.

the samsung instinct had this issue with the battery indicator as well in the beginning... it would jump from 100% to 80%, totally bypassing everything in between.

they fixed it during one of their updates. i'm assuming they're using the same technology and that they'll fix it as well. nonetheless, how's the total battery time (versus the displayed)?

I ran into the same situation last night. My phone ran itself down from 60% to 15% in a matter of two hours. But once it reached 15% it took another 2 hours to get to 5% and another hour to completely shut down (All while running pretty data intensive apps like HI AIM or Pandora).

I think it's interesting that Satinkzo is getting what seems to be much more accurate readings after he completely discharged his phone. I let my phone die to the point of shutting down -- but I did not restart it and drain the battery a second time, to the point where the phone would not even turn on.

Perhaps I'll try that tonight and see what results I get.

I just got the Moment yesterday and kept it charging most of the evening while I was playing around with it. Today was my first full day using it and so far I've had a quickly dying battery. I love the phone and I realize the battery is a price to pay to have all the fun stuff the phone can do but it is slightly irritating having to be concerned you'll be without the phone if your battery dies. One thing I have tried is turning down the brightness of the screen and adjusting the screen timer. And potentially not running the widgets (didn't think about that until just now:)) But still love the phone!

Update to my previous posts:

2 more phone calls, about 10 minutes on them, more web, couple voicemails, some text messages.

Battery 60% and it came off the charger around 6:30 or so this morning.
I am thinking the complete exhaustion of the battery last night has helped the phone guage the battery better. I'm gonna run it dead again tonight and see what happens.

How is it that the reviews never mention horrible battery life? I don't remember a single Hero or Moment review trashing the phone for the bad battery, though obviously both sets have big issues.

Do reviews expect bad things about the battery since they are constantly messing with the phone?

Maybe there is something to the battery being conditioned theory. Seems this issue has plagued the Hero (myself included) and now is present on the Moment.

Seems wierd reviewers would not pick up on this--maybe the PR folks at the respective companies send units to the reviewers that have a batter that has already gone the charge cycles.

The official reviews that I looked at did mention the battery life but only in regards to talk time. It was the user reviews that mentioned how little battery life the phone actually had. like I said in another forum I love the phone but may have to learn how to deal with the quickly dying battery. Even if that means having to travel with my charger (or buying a car charger)

You might want to check the battery quirk thread. It's active, myself and many others are keeping everyone updated on what we try and our results.

I called Sprint to report the issue since the phone is so new and I had a feeling they weren't aware. Unless everyone calls and reports the problem, they won't think there is one. I am having the same issues everyone here describes and I did everything that Sprint recommended.

CALL AND REPORT YOUR ISSUES!!!!

i don't think there is a problem with the battery. its a software thats showing you your battery meter. if you started the phone at 50% and used it until it was down to 35% then charged it the software thinks that the size of your battery is only 75% of the real size until you drain it all the way down and then charge it. do that several times over the next few days instead of trying to keep it charged and it should being to display correctish battery info.

this is just an educated guess. since 5% keeps working for over an hour that means its prolly displaying the battery incorrectly because the battery has never been that drained before in the phone w/ the software monitoring it.

if i'm wrong please let me know.

4 hours off the charger and I now show 60%. Let's see how long until I'm at 15%.

Yes, I agree with you and that is what I plan on doing. I think the battery is fine and will last longer after a week or so of conditioning.

BTW....6 hours and still at 60%

I charged mine for a little under six consistent hours last night and it dropped rather quickly through the day. But it's sat at 30% for the past 2-3 hours. Maybe it decided to level out a little bit for the day.

checking out the Battery Gauge app, during charge, i was only at 100% for about an hour in the middle of the night during the charge. that seemed odd.

How is that app......is it worth messing with, or does it drain your battery faster?

Well I have dropped to 50% already, my widget must be reading in units of 10.

summary update for today after just flat out killing my battery last night:

GPS: 25 minutes
Phone talk: about 20 minutes or so, not real sure
4 voicemails
10 texts
surfed web for about 45 minutes, some picture and graph intensive sites so decent download.
Sent a few emails, polling hotmail every hour, also have gmail running
Android Market, 2 downloads, about 20 minutes browsing around

Battery off charger around 6:30am, now 3:30pm, battery 60%.
I'm planning on running the sucker dead one more night then recharging again and compare tomorrow to today.
However for comparison, yesterday at this time, the phone was used much less and battery level was reported at 20% or 30%.

Sounds encouraging

is there an app that keeps track of the type of info that satinkzo has listed so we could get input from multiple sources without having to really think about it. i hate to think about stuff.

a few posts up i described that my phones usage down to around 30 percent. this is the continuation.

i decided to kill the battery and this is what happened. (last full charge at 9pm day before : read my previous post) i used the phone down to 15% warning at 12:30pm from there i played 2 full albums on the loud speaker full volume.( mastodon and stevierayvaughan live @mocambo) after that i went on youtube wifi on and left the phone playing a full length movie 1:30 minutes, still not down to 5 percent. played with youtube for another 30 minutes dled some apps and then it hit 5% again put the phone full volume for 1 more hr and it finally died. so this is the phone being on and doing work from 12:30 to 3:45 all on 15% battery. this is exactly what my windows 7 laptop does. so i put in my vote for bad battery meter instead of bad battery. if anyone gets similar results please post im sure it would help to make sure this is the case. im already convinced since it was annoying me that i couldnt kill the battery.

From my experience, my battery life on my hero was horrible, even after the sms fix. My Moment takes longer to charge fully, but has a great battery life. I watch 45 minutes of a movie everyday at the gym, listen to a few hrs of music a day. Check emails, send text and talk a good bit per day ... and still have over 50% of my battery when I come home from work at 5am. Great battery, great phone.

One more addition till later when I get time to kill the phone again tonight.
Used the GPS with google maps on the way home, about a 20 minute drive and then got home and loaded a few webpages. Also, apparently my hotmail was synced once while driving home.

Phone now down to 40% (just dropped to 40% when I closed the browser and loaded up handcent for a quick message).

So far today, I've done more than I normally do (especially GPS) and I am very encouraged by the change today from yesterday simply by killing the battery completely and not believing the guage.

I don't know of anything, I kept a little scratch pad in my pocket today, I suppose I could use a office style app or something, really haven't looked, but should for taking quick notes or maybe just send myself a text or something.
