and the battery had dropped to 91%

is that normal?

Totally normal and there are 1000000000000000 + threads about it! ;)

apparently it goes something like this:

when you plug it in, your desire will charge to 100% then cut off.

it will then start to use some power for the background apps and the android system.

when it reaches 90% it will start to charge again.

lets say it reaches 100% at 5am and then stops charging. if you're unlucky, you'll have started using it at 7am when the charge was already down to 93% but the charger hadn't kicked in yet because the 90% limit was not reached.

your few minutes of surfing will have taken it down to 91%.

in short, it was not 100% when you took it off the charger.

I found thatt turning the unit off over night, while charging, makes the battery wake up and hold the charge better.

battery is down at 50 ish %

all i've done is text - sent about 70

is there a battery app to see the % left and whats using it?

Down at 50% after what? / doing what?

There's lots of apps/widgets that will tell you how much battery is left. Some are better than others, have a look in the market.

Spare Parts will tell you where the battery is being used. The paid version of SystemPanel will show app usage history over time against battery usage.

With both apps you still need to interpret the results.
