Battery Smell

I'm having terrible luck with this phone. Does anyone have issues with their battery, stock or extended, giving off an awful smell when you take the back plate off and give it a sniff? I thought it was my extended battery so I took it to Verizon to have it tested and they said there is no smell. So I aired everything out and used my stock battery for a few hours. The smell is back. I think it would be extremely unlikely that it's my phone, considering the smell has been around for this phone and the one I had before it that I returned. Just wondering if it's just me or if everyone has a weird battery smell.

Actually guys, he's not crazy. A battery giving off a weird smell is essentially it's swan song.

If you've ever owned a laptop that eats through lithium-ion cells, you know what I'm talking about.

OP, your battery is defective and likely is losing it's ability to hold a charge. If multiple batteries keep doing this, then your phone's battery charging pins are defective, or there's a voltage issue....either way you need a new phone.

I know the smell you are talking about and I assure you that you are not weird, nor crazy. :)

Thanks! You might not think I'm crazy, but the ladies at the Verizon store do I'm sure.

Yep, a battery of any kind giving off a foul odor is a bad sign. Vapors given off by batteries can be explosive. Since you've got similar results w/ 2 diff. batteries, I'd get the phone replaced. Sounds like your phone might be overcharging the batteries.

Funny thing is that it's been the same with two different phones. I'm on my third one now. Maybe it's the ROM/kernel I'm running? But then you'd think that other people would notice. I use AOKP with Lean Kernel.

Then I'd get a new battery, factory reset your phone back to stock, and leave it that way for a couple weeks to see if the problem returns.

Definitely sounds like some sort of voltage consumption/overheating/overcharging issue to me.

Step 1: Buy new battery (or use battery that doesn't have foul odor)
Step 2: Revert phone to stock
Step 3: Wait a week (or until it starts to smell foul) and report findings
Step 4: ???
Step 5: PROFIT
